does anyone have contingency plans for travel if everything goes to poo? i'm trying to think of ways to make it down if 85 gets clogged with accidents... i guess if secondary roads are cleared that's a possibility

The thing about secondary roads, you could be cruising along just fine and come around a corner and the road be shaded or on a north facing hill. Going 45 -50 MPH and all of a sudden seeing slush, snow and ice is scary as hell!!!

I often drive between Burlington & Statesville. I like to take I-85 to Charlotte but only as far as Salisbury, Jake Alexander Blvd. But then I can cut over to Statesville easily from there. Much past that on I-85 & you run into Charlotte traffic. If you get off at Salisbury you can take Hwy 150 to Mooresville then catch I-77 from there. I-77 may be slow but there are fewer accidents it seems. My only suggestion.

i've been debating just taking I-40 to statesville and taking 77 south from there, but i'm pretty familiar with 85 and its back roads. i'm hoping to hear updates tomorrow morning from people who have taken both about general road conditions... which i'm hoping should be fine

yeah that's my exact concern. i had to dig my car out of a drift last night and it wasn't fun. the only way it would work is if they were semi major roads that have been plowed.

I don't know, i-77 from 485 to Mooresville fairly consistently has 3 accidents per rush hour a day..

Maybe tomorrow will be different though..

That's going the wrong way to get to Charlotte lol. I-77 is North going from 485 to Mooresville. Yes, weekday rush hour traffic on I-77S is horrendous from the lake to 485 but not so much on Sunday, especially if you leave early. Just don't be in a hurry because it will be slow until you get to 485.

I can tell you this: I-40 from the Davie County line to exit 54 (my exit :) ) may not be crystal clear. That's about 8 miles. The state seems to think Statesville stops living past exit 54 so they do not treat I-40 much between that and the eastern county line. I drove that way for 15 years to WS & for every storm the difference at the county line on the roads was very noticeable.

kewl. most of the local tv stations for each area have traffic cams. go check a few out see what they look like.

lol omg you are kidding. There are NO cameras from about Clemmons to Morganton on I-40. And NO cameras from the lake north on I-77. We are the desolate you're-on-your-own part of the piedmont.

My son took the train from Raleigh to High Point today and I picked him up at the train station. I live in Winston Salem. The interstates are fine. They are plowed, salted and were actually beginning to dry out at 4:00. With a few hours of sunlight and traffic it will be smooth sailing tomorrow. I was on I-40, Bus 85 in High Point and 311/I-74. Its pretty windy out there and that is actually helping the roads. Lots of plows working too.
