Today's presser: Cam, Ron and Getty

Similar to what I wrote about Ron above, Dave spends some time talking about Kony Ealy.  Starts at around 13 minutes.

I think in what I wrote about Ron, I was actually remembering some of what I'd heard Dave say when I tried to watch his presser live.

He talks about "before they can really open up, players need to learn to believe that coaches have their best interests at heart."(Sounds like this kind of trust was initially tough for Kony)

"With any player, they've got to really believe that you really care about them.  I've told these guys a number of times that my dream for them is to be the best player then can be, and to be the best man they can be.  Some of these players have never heard that before."  They're talented.  We want them to know that we care and are helping them to be the best players and the best men they can be.

Re: whether he is going to retool the team to prepare them to beat a team like Denver in the future.

No.  We'll stick to our philosophy.  Our philosophy wont' change.

You have to be able to run it.  Stop the run.  And rush the passer.  Big men allow you to do that.

Dave's discussion towards the end about whether there are really any such thing as "shut down corners" is really interesting.  Basically he reminds us all that it can never be just about one person.  Even a great corner needs a team supporting him.

He also said several times "You're never just one player away.  Never.  You're really not.  I know you guys don't believe me!"

It's clear that Gettleman will ALWAYS focus on building the TEAM and not get caught up in hype about one great player.

Hmmmm....

Sounds a bit like a subtle message (or not so subtle message) to Josh to lower his expectations?!?!

As much as I love Josh as a fan, and am hyped about the season he's had and the excitement he brings to the team, and part of me would love to twist Dave G's arm to work out a good 3 year deal, it is REALLY REALLY good to know that we have a GM who is not going to be swayed by the flash and the hype and lots of emotion, but really work on crafting a winning team and taking all factors into account - i.e. so as to not bankrupt a team chasing a really expensive flash player.

Rivera has so much heart and loyalty to his guys.   Dave G. is so brilliant in designing a plan and patiently working it out.  What a fantastic combo.  Heart & Head.  Just what we need.  (not to denigrate either Ron's brains or Dave's heart at all....!)
