I know these are linked in the "Today's Presser" thread, but some might not read through that.

Here are the links to the videos of today's press conferences by Ron & Dave G.

A couple of things:

1) The Panthers will be revising OTA schedule due to the fact that the seadon went 5 weeks longer.  Want to give guys same amount of rest.  No details yet, just that the league and NFLPA have approved of their plan.

2) Very little said about specific players' status or contracts, of course.   While not mentioning Josh specificially, Dave G. said he's not afraid to use the Franchise Tag.  He's done it before.  Whatever works.  Whatever is needed.  It's all about roster building.

3)  In a discussion of whether Ron had heard anything about players planning to retire, notably Peanut or Jared Allen, Ron said "I have a bit of a sense of what Jared's thinking, I'll let him talk to you about that"  Sounds to me like an announcement that Jared might retire could be forthcoming?

Re: Peanut, Ron said "no, we haven't talked at all.  I know he's rehabbing right now..."

4) GREAT GREAT comments by both Ron & Dave re: their pride in this team, the incredible team chemistry, their LOVE of the fact that Cam HATES to lose...

Both are really worth watching, as you'd expect.

One more good quotable:  In talking about Cam's tremendous success this season, Gettleman reminds us "the biggest thing was getting the offensive line right" so that Cam could stand in there and throw with confidence.

That bodes well that Gettleman will not ignore the need to continue to upgrade the Oline....

Re: whether he is going to retool the team to prepare them to beat a team like Denver in the future.

No.  We'll stick to our philosophy.  Our philosophy wont' change.

You have to be able to run it.  Stop the run.  And rush the passer.  Big men allow you to do that.

Dave's discussion towards the end about whether there are really any such thing as "shut down corners" is really interesting.  Basically he reminds us all that it can never be just about one person.  Even a great corner needs a team supporting him.

He also said several times "You're never just one player away.  Never.  You're really not.  I know you guys don't believe me!"

It's clear that Gettleman will ALWAYS focus on building the TEAM and not get caught up in hype about one great player.  A great quality to have in your GM,

I loved the part where the didn't want players that wanted to win.  They wanted players that hate to lose.

Everybody wants to win but the guys that hate to lose are the ones you want.  You want guys who are going to make the bus late for the flight home.

That is Cam.  I was angry when we lost and I didn't even play.  I hate to lose too.  I can only imagine being that close to the championship and miss it.  Worse than that get pulverized for 60 minutes.   Giving everything you have and still coming up short.  Worse than that is to answer a bunch of stupid fuging questions from a writer that is just waiting for that perfect comment to jettison his career to the top.    To force any losing QB into the spotlight before he is mentally ready is wrong.

Keep that edge Cam....I hope you never lose again but as long as it tears at your soul you will be one of the GOAT.

We have GREAT GM and coach. There is no doubt that they have created the best culture in the NFL for the players. I was about as down on this team as one could be after Sunday, but after hearing the PC's today I have no doubt that this team is set for several years to contend again and again.

David Newton has a pretty good summary of 10 key takeaways from the press conferences today.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/198134/keeping-josh-norman-among-the-10-takeaways-from-panthers-exit-day

He also gives some details about our current cap space.  Here's that section:

Quote

Josh Norman could get tagged: Gettleman wouldn’t say keeping the Pro Bowl cornerback was his top priority, but he admitted the “franchise tag’’ is an option he would consider. The projected value of the tag for a cornerback is about $13.8 million. The Panthers currently are $5.1 million under the cap, which will jump from $143.28 million in 2015 to between $150 and $153.8 million. Gettleman also reminded that no team is one player from winning the Super Bowl. But you got the feeling the organization will do what it can to keep Norman. As Gettleman said, “I don’t want to develop guys for other teams.’’

By the way mods, maybe this thread can get pinned so folks know about the press conference video links?  There are so many threads being started in recent days, it's hard to keep things on the front page.

Excellent article at BBR by Bill Voth re: Dave G's comments today about shut down corners and roster building.

http://blackandbluereview.com/predicting-josh-normans-future-with-dave-gettlemans-thoughts-on-shutdown-corners/

This was a key excerpt of what Gettleman had to say:

Quote

To watch Norman do Revis-like things on your own is another. But that hasn't put a dent in Gettleman's philosophy about a shutdown corner's value versus an entire roster.

"At the end of the day what people forget is — you know that wide receiver he's covering? He gets paid to play, too," Gettleman said.

"Being a shutdown corner — you need help. This is not a game you play alone. You're not a batter looking at the pitcher. There's a whole lot more to it than that, trust me."

So while he's evaluating what to do with Norman, who's set to become a free agent, Gettleman has to weigh the importance of one great player with factors that help that make him great.

"You’re never only one player away," Gettleman said. "I know you people look at me like I have brain damage but you’re not. I’ve seen it over and over and over again."
