Would you rather have KK or Joe Staley and Nick Fairley in 2017?  In theory you could have the latter for nearly the same price.  Granted, a day 2 pick (I even said 40 overall), may be necessary to ensure the 49ers part ways with Staley (I also would ask for our 2018 4th back as well), but it's feasible.  Not to mention that although Staley's 2017 hit is $11, his 2018 and 2019 hits come down to a relative steal of $7.7.

If we plug in a 31, 32... any 30+ year old LT then we are getting a couple years out of them, barring injury.

That means we are either hoping for a FA LT in the future or planning on drafting one on day 2, this year, in a crap class... cus these tackles will need a couple years to protect our franchise.

It is our #1 issue by far.

I just am sick of having a stop gap LT... the 2nd reason I'm behind Reiff is his age (first, obviously is his ability to stay relatively healthy).

I would like a piece to plug in for the next 5-6 years. Give Cam some piece of mind in his prime.

2015 obviously wasn't bad with a stop gap.  2014 and 2016 don't even qualify as stop gaps or even band aids, unless we're talking about the cheap, generic ones with Wonder Woman on them.  Other than taking Fournette, most would love if a sure, plug and play franchise LT that checked off all the boxes was there at 8.  But without reaching somewhat it just doesn't look to be in the cards.

One name that's not been mentioned here  amidst the dozen+ names that have but may still have some clay to mold is former #2 overall pick Greg Robinson.  We could throw a bone to the Rams who are desperate for picks and a lot of other things for him, but can we trust him?  Hellllll no.

The answer is NOT on the roster.  And doable.  But not easy.  I for one would err on the side of protecting Cam's health than desperately reaching for our "young" franchise LT.

Would you prefer 2 years of a guy that has show the ability to be a top 10 or even top 5 tackle or a guy that can give you 4-5 years but has never played at the level?

I can see both sides to it.

5 years of average to above average players, consistently. A front of B-B+ that can mesh together.

For whatever reason, some players just suffer from the injury bug more than others.

Talent does nothing for us when it is on the trainers table.

To further the point,

I think we saw exactly what consistency can do at the end of 2016.

As makeshift a line as you get... 4th RT, Remmers at LT... and they played pretty well. Not great... but it just goes to show what the priority has to be.

I think having KK tagged in 17 almost goes without saying.

I almost hope that Berry isn't available.

Signing Berry could impact our ability to spend the money needed to address LT via Free agency.

Considering the talent available to replace Tackle vs Safety, and the impact of each position... I have to hope we continue in the DG way and go with a mid level vet at SS... or just keep our secondary as is.

That said,

If DG signs Berry and Reiff while Tagging KK in the process, I will 100% believe he is committed to fielding a superbowl caliber team.

Lets say dreams come true and we sign Berry and draft Fournette, I would not hate it if we traded a draft pick for Joe Thomas. Even though he probably only has a couple seasons left in him, his service for whatever time he's here would be invaluable and we would be built to win now. I don't think trading for him would cost that much because Cleveland knows this dude deserves to play for a contender at this point.

40 overall for Thomas/Staley and those teams 4th in 2018 to recoup from the Lee deal.  Those teams are utter fools if they don't take it.  Both are awesome team guys and awesome players but I like Staley's contract better ($11, $7.7, $7.7 for 3 years) (Thomas $10, $10 for 2).  No better scenario for the 2017-2019/2020 Panthers and no better scenario for those hopeless teams as no one is giving them anything higher than 40.

It's even better than that. We would only be responsible for the base salary. Staley is a steal at 8.2, 4.8 and 4.8M for next 3 years. Thomas is 8.8M/yr for two. I'd throw that pick at them for elite LT play for next 2-3 years GUARANTEED! Whitworth should be only one in FA they pursue this hard. Peters as a fallback. Reiff as desperation.

Eric Berry is a eraser at safety. Something we will need to be able to dethrone the Falcons. KK is a beast but he can be easily replaced, I think Butler and definitely Star will step up & if we are getting more pressure from our edge rushers this season we won't even notice he's gone. #SignEricBerry

This is an interesting point I hadn't thought of. We could let KK walk and simply replace them in a very deep d-line draft. The 13.5 million offset becomes a moot point. The talent is there has late as the end of day 2. Even though three would be a consideration

I'd say Berry-- we've needed our own Earl Thomas, our secondary needs a leader bad-- dline will have more coverage pressure and sacks immediately. Also can we please bring in a Dallas offensive line? Thanks

I advocated, earlier, for a trade for La'el Collins. He would be penciled in as a RT and I dunno if we could come to terms... value discrepancy, but I would like to see him over Remmers.
