The Next Head Coach

Absolutely Not, 17wins over 4years, you watch that team how they played under Nolan now under Singletary with pretty much the exact same roster and its night and day.

+ Fans get irritated by Fox's wind up monkey clapping on the sideline, Nolan was Siefert esq in his utter lack of emotion standing there with his had over his mouth poised in his suit like "The Thinker"

Others hit it on the head Nolan is one of those great Coordinators not HC material A LA Dom Capers

i just reread this thread and i'm surprised no one mentioned jim harbaugh.

to me he is one of the top choices out there. for those who are wanting QB to be a priority, who better than a former first round QB to run the team. he comes from good bloodlines and has a lot of experience as a player and some really good experience as a coach.

That means w/Nolan as coach, the Panthers would be averaging around 4-12 a season, yeah sign him up real quick, forget about Cowher!

A couple of things:

1) I wouldn't bet the farm on the idea that JR will go with a DC simply because that is what he has previously hired. First of all, we really don't even know for certain that going defense is his preference. If at the times we were looking for a HC he felt the DC crop provided the best HC potential, then is may be nothing more than a coincidence. Also, with the problems this team has had with consistency since it's inception, even if his preference is defense, he may decide to go in a completely different direction than he has previously. Bottom line, I think he looks for the best candidate, and won't limit his options to just one side of the ball.

2) While I'm not sure I want Cowher as our next HC, I think it is ludicrous to minimize his impact on that team by giving too much credit to LeBleau. Don't get me wrong, I think Dick LeBleau is a great DC, but don't for a second think Cowhers fingerprints weren't all over that defense. He's always had a good defense that played pretty much the same way, no matter who was DC. And for the record, the Pittsburgh system is Cowhers system. So you can't credit the system without giving Cowher due credit.

3) During his chat, Yas mentioned Mike Mularkey as a possibility for HC, and the more I think about him, the more intrigued I am. Sure, things didn't work out great with Buffalo, but I really like what he is doing with Atlanta. With the exception of a young star at QB, we are very similar, and think it would be an easy transition. Of course, he would need to bring in a strong defensive mind, but that goes for any new HC.

4) IF we do end up bringing in Cowher, we could pretty much expect to make the switch to a 3-4 (don't want to bring up that arguement, only stating it since it is Cowher's preferred system). So, in the event BC is hired as HC, we would obviously need to find a guy to run the system, and one guy that will likely be available and has had great success as a 3-4 DC is Wade Phillips. While I hate him as a HC, he is a very good DC and should thrive along side a HC with as strong a presence as Cowher has. And since WP will almost certainly be fired by JJ, I could see him as a good fit here...again, assuming we hire Cowher and go 3-4.

I just hope Jerry Richardson takes his time and does this right. Don't jump on the first name that the fans scream out...assuming Fox gets fire in the first place, that is. You know, he just might surprise everybody and turn this thing around.

I agree..so many people are screaming cowher but i would rather have a up and coming corridinator

LeBeau setup the Zone blitzes. He did it before he was with the Steelers, and Cowher hired him to get it.

And the Steelers have been running the 3-4 before Cowher, since 83.

Mularkey would be a bad fit. If you're looking for offensive minds, you can find better.

Another downside to offensive coaches - they tend to want to focus more on offense. Some call their own plays. All distractions.

It's the college coach thing. Saban and Petrino have made it pretty hard for them to get NFL jobs in general, but might be even harder with the Panthers. As far as I can recall, the team has never even interviewed a college coach.

Gantt had an article about this a while back, but you can also pick up a lot by looking at the team's history.

It's not just that defensive coaches are all the team has ever hired. It's pretty much all they've ever even interviewed. The only coach I can think of that Richardson has considered who wouldn't have been purely considered a defensive coach would be Joe Gibbs (when the expansion first started).

It seems pretty clear it's Richardson's philosophy. And honestly, he's not alone in that line of thinking.

Jerry did talk to Spurrier, didn't he?

Dodged a bullet there.

Anyway, I like Harbaugh. And he's got it in his blood. I don't want to take away from his brother, but I'd feel like Jim would be a legit candidate if he came from the same circles his brother had - coaching with Reid, Johnson, Ryan. Jim doesn't have that background, or those networking ties.

A lot gets made of the good ol boy network, but that gets you the best assistants. Harbaugh has pro contacts, but he's not coming from the pro game. He'd have to pull a Mike Nolan type hire on defense and IMO he'd have to show a strong plan with an experienced pro coordinator and QBs coach. I don't like HCs that call their own plays, I want a coach who has a good feel for the game to call things at times but I don't want that guy involved in one side of the team.

(one interesting thing about Harbaugh is he has Greg Roman, who was a coach with us from 95-2001, on staff at Stanford as Running Game Coordinator. He also worked with the Ravens and the Dom Capers' Texans, so he has 10+ years pro experience at only 36 years old)

On the topic of the Harbaughs, Reid, and so on, keep in mind that back when Reid was hired, he was one of a very small group of head coaches that had never been a coordinator (Herm was another). Now you've got the Singletary, Harbaugh type guys, and that's becoming a big trend.

    • Thank God DM used that #8 pick on a bona fide WR1 and not some bum pass rushing prospect like Stewart or someone else. I believe Tet is legit WR1 material and going forward will be our long term answer at that position since we desperately were in need of one once they traded away DJ Moore.  Tet could possibly end up even being better long term than someone who I respect a ton as a WR in Moore. Evans has been a pleasant surprise and great TE/FB depth piece going forward who could make the most of his opportunities.  Any good offense worth a damn in the NFL has 3 TEs that can do multiple things and being scared by Ian Thomas play for years should makes us all appreciate what Evans is quietly doing as a ROOKIE at one of the hardest positions to learn at the pro level.  Keep cooking DM. This season is not over obviously but seeing some growth out of young talent finally is a breathe of fresh fuggin air for once.
    • Saw this show up in my new feed. Nice to see a couple of our rookies making it into the top 5 so far, even if it is a pff measure... From https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-top-15-rookies-week-9-2025 ... 4. TE Mitchell Evans, Carolina Panthers (78.7) Evans struggled in the Panthers’ tight win over the Packers, finishing with a 41.8 PFF overall grade — third worst among tight ends this week. He was not targeted in the game and played only one snap in pass protection. He did log 15 run-blocking snaps, and although he earned a 68.9 PFF run-blocking grade in zone looks (seven snaps), his 39.0 mark in gap schemes (second worst for the week) dragged him down to a 46.6 PFF run-blocking grade overall — sixth worst for the week. Despite seeing zero targets over his past two games, Evans still leads the Carolina tight end group with a 74.3 PFF receiving grade. He has caught all nine of his targets for 90 yards, six first downs and two touchdowns. Evans also leads the Panthers’ tight end group in PFF run-blocking grade (72.2). He has recorded a 20.5% positive play rate across 175 snaps.  5. WR Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers (78.6) McMillan had a better day against the Packers, recording four catches for 46 yards. Most of that production came in the first quarter via two 16-yard catches — one of which he snatched from Carrington Valentine’s hands, who was in perfect position to break up the pass. McMillan accounted for three first downs on the day, although Green Bay was able to limit his impact after the catch, holding him to 0.8 yards after the catch per reception. McMillan now has 41 catches for 558 yards — a top-15 mark. He is also tied for second with 19 explosive gains of 15-plus yards. Three of McMillan’s catches against the Packers came between the numbers, bringing him to 22 for 318 yards and 19 first downs (tied for second most) this season. He owns a 26.1% threat rate and a 76.6 PFF receiving grade between the numbers. He also ranks in the top 10 in explosive gains (10) and yards after the catch per reception (5.5) within that area of the field.
