Some Kickers in the draft

A nice little article by Jordan Rodrigue about some the kickers that are in the draft. I wouldn't be mad if we used a 4th on this guy:

 Zane Gonzalez

College: Arizona State

Ht.: 6-foot-1. Wt.: 190.

Projected round: Fourth.

Comment: Gonzalez is the reigning Lou Groza award winner for the nation’s best college kicker and a unanimous All-American. He specializes in kicks over 50 yards, making seven of nine attempts from 50-plus yards in 2016.

I don't know about a 4th. Maybe in the 6th if he is still around

Sure. I'd like to get him as UDFA too, but he's projected in the 4th. While I'd rather use later picks, I wouldn't be mad at a 4th.

No. No. And No.

You do not pick a kicker above the 6th round, period.

Meh. I'm not sold on that logic. But I wouldn't go above 4th. Side note, has DG ever drafted a kicker? I can't think of one off the top of my head. They are always brought in as free agents...or trade (Lee).

Just based on the fact that more UDFA kickers are successful in comparison to drafted kickers makes me even tentative in drafting one.

The Bucs proved that drafting a kicker high can screw you over in the end.

100% agree on the Bucs debacle. But DG said you want guys that are gonna make the team in the first 4 rounds and the last 3 rounds try to catch lightning. But a kicker can be a game changer (as we know) so I wouldn't be against a 4th if we knew he was a stud. But I guess you never truly know that.

Considering Gano may be the best kickoff specialist in the NFL and has been a top 5-10 kicker his entire career with us sans last year, gonna go ahead and say we should pass on drafting a kicker.

Do you guys wanna get a new QB since Cam sucked last year too? Sheesh.

Gano is not clutch at all which is what you want your kicker to be. And the new kickoff rule makes having a KO specialist obsolete. No one should be booting it through the endzone anymore.

Blood is boiling, face is red, hair standing on the back of my neck...only half kidding.

The guy is paid to be a guy he is NOT-which is an UDFA that's bounced around multiple teams, is less than 80% for a career, and is a choke artist from the kicking choke artist factory, Florida State.

Did you forget the missed XP @Seattle in 2015 that was glossed over by Olsen's epic TD?  Or the miss in the Super Bowl itself that would have given much needed points and an emotional lift?????

The guy MUST GO!!!!!

THIS was the standing 8 count http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000697392/Graham-Gano-misses-potential-game-winning-50-yard-field-goal

THIS was THE final blow http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000721717/Graham-Gano-misses-potential-game-tying-extra-point

The injury excuse and laughable Bucs finale only further exposed the OBVIOUS!!!!!!!!

Gano is not untouchable like Cam or Luke or several others. So ignoring players that might be able to improve your team seems like a bad choice. Not saying we should draft a kicker but putting information out there about them.

It's draft week and I haven't seen a thread about kickers. Thought the Huddle could use some information about guys closer to my level of physicality. :)

most kickers aren't clutch. robert aguayo was considered one of the best kicker prospects ever and he completely sucked. same with mike nugent. once you get a decent kicker (which gano is) then you hold onto him... otherwise you get a stupid ass olindo mare/justin medlock situation and are fuged.

    • Sound write-up MHS, as always.  Agree that the smart move that forward thinking franchises make would be drafting a tackle early, if not for sure in R1, depending on who's there. Based on early predictions we're choosing between Fano and Proctor. No brainer here...Fano all day. Proctor does not move the needle for me. In my mind, Icky has less future here than Brooks does. I love Icky, but he has been average as a top-10 pick, one good year where you saw the potential...and that was this year. He's built like a RT and his strengths are there, but he's always played left. I also feel like part of what has held him back from being elite, was his work ethic. He was known for it coming out, but feel like he fell right at home in Carolina and maybe didn't push himself as hard as he needed to. Throw in a major crucial injury that will take time to recover and a historical low return rate to current form, and the outlook is not great. Fano can play both sides and we need to also plan for Moton's departure. Either way, delaying drafting a tackle early this year will hurt us down the line. Our current OL is overpriced and needs to start adding draftees to start balancing out the inevitable changes coming in the next 2-3 years.  As others have said, maybe Icky can replace Hunt or Lewis in a couple years when he's fully recovered....IDK. Also not a guarantee, but then you have to figure out his contract and it becomes even more clouded.
    • It's past time to just eliminate it in terms of an event. Just do the voting, name the roster, and move on. When you get down to 6th and 7th alternates it's just absurd. It doesn't mean anything.
