Statistical Analysis: Looking At Personnel Groups, Receiving/Passing Data, & Formations From Panthers @ 49ers

For those of you who are into stats (such as @KB_fan) and/or scheme/playcalling, these charts are for you.

So, first few things that pop out is how diverse and few our targets really were. CMC led the team with the most pass catches, as he was targeted 6 times and caught 5 passes. No one else even eclipsed 2 receptions.

Panthers were also in man 28% of the time. However, comparing the first half (which was a lot of man) to the second half (lot of zone after a comfortable lead) shows that perhaps the 49ers game only showed a glimpse of what Wilks plans on doing defensively. But if you actually compare to last year, we ran more man than normal this game.

Either way, here's a good article on the defense that breaks down the film behind it.

It's also interesting to see our success out of 11 personnel. Pretty much the same formula used in 2015, this time against the 49ers. Panthers seem to be trying out stuff more-so than really showing their full deck.

What should also be noted is that man coverage does need a lot of film study. Can't really cover a man without knowing exactly what his tendencies are and how to counter. Of course, that requires a bit of film and study. Zone helps simplify concepts and allows to ease the secondary in for the first few weeks.

However, do expect our man coverage to increase down the road. Wilks likes being aggressive.
