Summary:

When it comes to each individual season, the numbers above show that starting in 2013 through 2015, the overall scoring numbers on 1st possessions improved from year to year, but have been falling ever since.  And, looking at the extrapolated numbers for 2017, this year will be the worst year yet for scoring on 1st possessions. 

So, when it comes to coming out of the locker room and establishing momentum, the "Riverboat Ron" years (2013 and 2014) were on-field lab experiments (you notice in those years that there was a turnover-on-downs in each season? That's because Rivera was going for it more on 4th down in those years) in improving scoring on 1st possessions that resulted in the best year for the Panthers in that regard in 2015.  But, since then, the bell curve has resumed its down-slope and Rivera has gone back in his shell.

@KB_fan  I think it would be fascinating to see a comparison between the Rivera/Shula numbers above and other NFL teams and the NFL average on 1st possession scoring if such data is available.  Are the Rivera/Shula numbers comparable, better, or worse?  I mean, to me, I would WAG that the Rivera/Shula numbers would be worse across the board, but that would just be me eye-balling the issue and not analyzing it using hard data.

Edit: If a game went into overtime, the overtime first possession was counted as an additional 2nd half first possession.  So, in an overtime game, there would be one 1st half first possession and two 2nd half first possessions.
