It was definitely not a good clean hit. It was stupid hit. The only question is, was it an intentional stupid hit, or just a stupid hit?

No, its a penalty if a defender launches himself into a defenseless receiver. Ray Lews was penalised and fined for this just last week.

Maybe he timed it wrong and thought the ball would get there by then, and was trying to make the catcher drop it. Either way, yeah not a clean hit.
