Says who?

Even if the NFL places stipulations on the new owner, those can only last for so long if they are enforceable at all.  George Shinn

Says the NFL.

They've specifically stated they want the Panthers staying in the Carolinas.

They have also said they want to expand outside the US.  I believe Canada is outside the US.

If San Diego and St. Louis can lose a team with their TV markets, so can Charlotte.

Sure they can, but they're not going to.

There are a few reasons the team won't move.

1)  As Mr. Scot said, the NFL has gone on record as saying they want the team to stay in Charlotte.  So, any attempt to move would meet internal opposition from the NFL.

2)  There is a relocation fee of 500,000 million (and could be higher in the future).  So, after spending some 2.5 billion, I can't see a new owner adding another half billion to move, especially when they would still likely have to contribute even more to assist in the building of another stadium in the new city.  Even if the new city and the league are willing to help with the stadium costs, the owner would still have to put up a pretty big chunk of change.  So, in addition to the 2.5 billion they already spent on the team, moving to a new city would likely cost an additional 1-1.5 billion dollars.

3) The Panthers are one of the top revenue generating teams.  There is a strong fan base that supports the team, and spends money on it.

4) The TV market is VERY strong here.  Charlotte is the 22 ranked television market in the country.  St. Louis is 21st with only about 25 million viewers separating the markets...and St. Louis has already proven themselves to be not able to come close to Charlotte in generating revenue.  San Diego is 28th with over 100 million fewer viewers.  And like St. Louis, has proven that they cannot support a team anywhere close to what Charlotte does.  Now that doesn't even take into account that the Panthers draw from Raleigh-Durham, which is the 24 largest market, Greenville-Spartanburg, which  37th, Greensboro/Winston-Salem, which is 46, and so on.

So, while a lot of teams draw from their immediate region, they have competition beyond that, the Panthers have the Carolina's market all to themselves.  If we just included each of those cities I mentioned into the market rating, we would be in the top three markets in the country...and I didn't even include Columbia or Charleston, which would have added another million or so viewers.

Bottom line, it just wouldn't make any sense to move the team, from a business standpoint or fan base standpoint.  I get the concern from an emotional perspective, but this is simply too lucrative of an area for a team to leave.

Throw in that our potential "Canadian" owner isn't Canadian and lives in Florida.

I hope so.

Not to mention the relocation fee of 500m dollars and a free stadium that has a decade of life in it minimum. The only way a team leaves before 5 years is if a city donates a 2b dollar stadium to the new owner and he relocates. Unlikely and an aweful business move.  It would also destabilize the nfl market in this region which the NFL doesn’t want  I would stop watching the nfl all together if we moved in the next 2-5 years
