Scared of 3rd and long

Am I crazy or is everything we do on 1st and 2nd down to insure that we don't end up in 3rd and long?  Our goal seems to be making sure we have a 3rd and 4 on every set of downs. 

I'm exaggerating somewhat, but there are a lot of series where after the first down play I'm pretty confident that the next play doesn't really have a chance of getting a first down and we are just hoping to give us a 3rd and manageable. 

On a side note..... good teams use timeouts to create extra points at the end of halves and games.  If it wasn't for a 63yrd field goal, there would be some major discussion going on about the way we handled the end of the game.
