Gaulden was a late third rounder and Huddlers need to keep this in perspective because folks here act like Ronnie Lott was available in the third round.  Panthers are all about the front seven and don't put a high value on safeties and the Reid signing was very surprising and probably a bit of a desperation move.

It's not Gaulden's fault that he represents the biggest draft investment we've made in the FS position in a decade, but it's the truth. It's not Gaulden's fault that he represented our best hope of hopefully righting the FS position, but it's the truth. It's not Gaulden's fault that we're in a situation where we're forced to look into moving a CB coming off of a brutal leg injury to FS. Well, okay, it might be partially Gaulden's fault on that last one.

Justin Reid, a guy we brought in for a private visit and ranked late first to mid second by most every draft site was a third rounder and he played fantastic for Houston. Ronnie Harrison started 8 games and played OK for Jacksonville and he was drafted after Gaulden.

Just because we don’t value them doesn’t mean we should have no expectations for Gaulden. An UDFA and a guy who missed a year after being on his 4th team in 6 years are beating him out in his second year.

Also, for those all about pass rush hiding bad secondaries any thoughts on being 29th in pass defense in 2016 while being 2nd in sacks or being 18th in pass defense in 2017 while being 3rd in sacks? We were 18th in pass defense in 2018 while being 27th in sacks. So, while sacks may have hurt us last year it sure didn’t make up for bad secondary pieces either in the two prior years.

Justin Reid wasn’t available when Panthers picked Gaulden and I believe Ronnie Harrison tore his knee up and was on IR. Perhaps you are saying Panthers should have gone safety over LT and I definitely disagree with this and especially with Cams shoulder.

People here are already writing Little off as a bust which is a mistake bc it is very very early.

Harrison had a minor bone bruise and they said he went on IR because it was the end of the season and Jax was already out of it. I hate to keep bringing up Reid, but I would have traded up with 85 and 88 (actually more than enough to move up into the late 2nd) when I saw him slip into the 3rd.

All that said, I wanted a safety in 2018’s draft when we went safety, but just the wrong guy. Outside of the trade up (hated losing pick 77 when I think Little would have lasted), I was fine with 2019’s draft. I’m even OK with Grier. I’m more than willing to hope Little locks down LT well even if I wasn’t a big backer.

A lot of people here wanted Justin Reid including myself, but I don't think anyone would have passed on Donte Jackson to get him and the Panthers got Ian Thomas by trading the 88th pick and this is looking like a solid move.  Can you imagine last year without Ian Thomas or going into this year without him and solely relying on Olson?  2018 draft was very solid.
