Brady coach-speak, or Samuel to be more involved

I said earlier this week that Samuel and Ian Thomas are afterthoughts so far. Well, apparently Brady realizes that he's not actually using Samuel as effectively as he could.

From Rotoworld:

  • Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady said he wants to get Curtis Samuel more involved in the team's offense.

In three years at Ohio State, Samuel logged 171 rushes and 106 receptions, and has five carries through two games this season, creating speculation that he could inherit some of Christian McCaffrey's rushing workload in the coming weeks. Panthers coaches, however, have been clear that Mike Davis is CMC's backup and will serve as the main ball carrier. That doesn't mean Brady can't devise new ways to manufacture touches for Samuel in what will likely be a pass-heavy game script this week against a tough Chargers defense. Samuel is a borderline flex in 14-team leagues this week.

Might mean absolutely nothing, or maybe we can get another legit playmaker involved in the offensive flow of the game! Honestly, I'm about tired of the gadget realm that Samuel has been relegated to since seemingly forever. If we're not going to get him more involved, then we might as well let him go.

He's the third most targeted player on our team and 4th in total touches. Not sure I would agree he "isn't being utilized." He's been more efficient on the ground than he has been catching the ball through two games.

Mike Davis made a bigger impact in just one game than Curtis has in two games.

I've seen him used much more effectively in the past! There is a disconnect with Samuel and efficiency within Brady's offense as far as I'm concerned. Slot receivers play decent roles in today's NFL, and we already saw the stat earlier this year about Samuel's ability to create separation.

Brady obviously knows there is an issue, or he wouldn't have brought it up.

Honestly, we've changed OC's, HC's, and QB's and we still keep generally seeing the same Curtis Samuel. At this point, I think 100% of Samuel's struggles are on him. He's been rated fairly consistently in the 60-100 range on Football Outsiders his whole career. He's still there now.

The more and more stats/metrics/ratings I look at from NFL Next Gen to PFR to FO to PFF....it all says the same thing. He's just not a guy.

Sure, I can probably put together a hell of a Ted Ginn highlight reel too. To this point, Samuel has been just as disappointing on his rookie deal as Ginn was. If you look at Ted Ginn's years in Miami and Curtis Samuel's, you are gonna basically see that Curtis has been a poor man's Ted Ginn.

Ginn and Samuel may have some similarities, as do most receivers, in regards to certain aspects of their careers or within the opinions of many, but they aren't the same type of receiver or football player.

And I still believe that Belichick would somehow turn Samuel into the legit threat that he has flashed.

I still like the poor man's Percy Harvin comparison most for Samuel.

The only issue with that comparison is the production. Harvin was utilized at a higher rate during his first three years and far more productive(and efficient) than Samuel. Miami era Ginn and Samuel are much closer in terms of statistical performance.

Yeah, well Belichick has polished many a turd that reverted to being an unpolished turd once they left New England. Probably not a great example since no one gets more out of their players than BB.

Not really. He may know how to maximize a receiver's talent, and we all know that he's very much cognizant of what I'll refer to as the prime time-depriciation balance, but I am loath to say that he has taken turds and polished them, only for them to turn back into a turf at the stroke of midnight. Belichick just maximizes talent and time better than most.

Samuel was always a bad pick for us largely because CMC was drafted by us.  So we could never actually use him he really should be.  We had someone that could do it all better and that virtually never left the field.

Harvin played w/ AP.  A nearly one dimensional rusher.  So there was opportunity for Harvin to be the swiss army knife.  Which is Samuel.

Ted Ginn Jr runs the vertical route as good as any one in the NFL.  Just a 50/50 if he can could catch it.   Samuel while fast, doesn't really do what Ginn did IMO.
