Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Review

What I really hated about Revenge of the Sith was how at the end everything was tied up so neatly with a bow. I mean, they show us Leia going to Alderaan, Luke going to Tatooine, and we see the beginning of the Death Star construction, just so it would perfectly tie in to the beginning of A New Hope. Did we really need to see that? No. The Star Wars movies were around for 30 years before the new ones came out, and I never heard any complaints of "Waitaminute! When did they build that thing?"

It was so cheezy. Like they were actually expecting us to watch the movie and go, "Oh! That's how it happened! Oh, it's all coming together now, I see. Geez the first three movies would have made a lot more sense if I had seen Leia go to Alderaan, Luke go to Tatooine and the Death Star under construction."

Come on, George Lucas. We're big boys, now. We can figure that out for ourselves.

I think a lot of that is because they started with 4, 5, and 6... There has been a lot that happened in the time between 4 and 1, and as has been mentioned, these films targeted a new generation of viewers... They also tried to make it good for old fans, but some of that was compromised at the expense of the new demographic...

Overall, I was more than happy with all of them... I saw them all in the theater at least twice...

I'm hoping we'll eventually see a 7, 8, and 9... but I bet it never happens...

The good thing about the Star Wars phenomena is that it has/will continue to inspire works for years and years, if not forever...

I don't care what anyone says...

Star Wars in any form (yes even the kiddie'd down Phantom Menace) is 10x better than anything else Hollywood puts out to this day...

I'd rate the 6 in this order

Empire Strikes Back

Revenge of the Sith

A New Hope

Return of the Jedi

Attack of the Clones

The Phantom Menace

But FWIW, TPM is still better than any of the LotR movies to me... You have to view the Star Wars work as a complete thing, and it's impact on the world as we know it is greater than anything in entertainment history...

If it wasn't for Star Wars, Sci-Fi/CGI/Movie technology would all be set back at least a decade...

Therefore, even if it's the worst part of the Star Wars universe, it's still better than most of the stuff out there...

That's how I rank them, but I don't go as far as crapping on LOTR. Love them, too. I gots lots of love to give.

I never was a big Darth Maul fan. Too ninja-esque. I liked Dooku a lot better. If only he wasn't killed so easily in EpIII.

I don't understand the love affair everyone has with Maul. Yes, he looked cool, but his character pretty much sucked to me.

I am speaking just from the standpoint of the screenplay, even though I am an unabashed fan of the books.

Maul was the Boba Fett of Ep I. He looked cool and was a badass and anything else was generated by fans.

I can agree about the better written thing to an extent, and that LotR was a great piece of literary and film history...

But, once you have delved into the expanded universe as far as I have, there are way more interesting things in Star Wars than LotR... LotR really leaves no room for expansion...

LOTR was written down in a long series of works. SW was a series of sketchy scripts from the top of Lucas' head when he was younger. Not to say that either is a bad thing, but in that manner, SW is able to change and have a lot more give when working in that universe. I'm a much bigger fan of SW than LOTR, so I'm not trashing Lucas' methods, just saying they're different.

I've read everything EU, except the kids stuff....even Darksaber...and it's total volume is still smaller (in scope, not brevity) than all of the back story Tolkien had/has written for Middle Earth. The man invented not only new complete languages, but also an entire mythology from creation to the present time (which was his main goal). I still like SW better, but to say there is no room for expansion and exploration in Middle Earth is disingenuous. The Tolkien family just has tight and complete control over the product. Children of Hurin which was released last year was pretty good.
