Why didn't John Fox have any loyalty to Rodney Peete?

Here's something I've been trying to figure out today. When John Fox came in 2002, one of his first signings was Rodney Peete at quarterback. He obviously knew that Peete wasn't a long-term solution at age 36, but check out Peete's 2002 stats:

223 of 381, 2,630 yards, 15 TDs, 14 picks, won 4 of his last 5 games in 2002.

And here's what got him benched at halftime during Opening Day 2003: 4 of 10, 19 yards, 0 TDs, 0 picks

Looking at Peete's half vs. Jacksonville in 2003, those numbers look downright awesome compared to several games that Jake has had this season.

Now I'm not about to say that Fox was wrong in benching Peete and turning it over Delhomme because he absolutely was. But why was he so quick to pull Peete in Opening Day no less and yet has refused to officially bench Jake despite having the worst season in franchise history?

That, plus history. Prior to his meltdown, Delhomme had led the team through a Super Bowl season, an NFC Championship and some other good times. That kind of history makes it tough to let someone go. Peete, prior to his exodus, had won some games but nothing major.

Worth noting that one of the reasons Gross gave for re-signing with Carolina was Jake Delhomme. Guys that go to war together build loyalty to each other.

Mind you, that's not a defense of the decision to stay with Delhomme longer than he should have, just an explanation. I understand why he did it, but it was still the wrong decision.

      If Brooks is fully healed,and they think he is, then we should be better.  We upgraded center and Hunt will be back.   At RB, Rico will turn 28 next month. Hubbard turns 27 next month.  Brooks turns 23 in July.  If Brooks pans out, he was a better college RB than either Rico or Chuba. He has not been taking a beating for 2 years--so if the knee holds, we could have something.   This is what it says about RB: Career Average: Running backs have the shortest average careers in the NFL, lasting just 2.57 years on average. The Peak: Most running backs reach their absolute peak performance around age 25 or 26, with nearly all peak seasons occurring before age 29. The "Age 28-29" Cliff: Statistical data shows a notable 15% to 25% drop in per-game fantasy and offensive production as backs transition from their age-28 to age-29 seasons. Very few running backs sustain elite production past age 30.

      I’ll give him that. I love his belief in the trenches being where games are decided. Because that is also my belief.  And he is not fooling around he jumps all over a goal. Fix the OL. Well it cost but he fixed it.  And fixed it again this year while still getting pieces for the defense.  He has made a couple of mistakes but just keeps swinging after a miss until he gets something done.
