Josh McCown

I'm sure there have been a couple threads about him in the past, but because he was on IR all year, no one really talked about him. Do you think Josh McCown will be on the Panthers next year? I think it's unfortunate that he got injured and ended up on IR because I feel like John Fox would have benched Delhomme a hell of a lot sooner if McCown had been healthy. However, Fox might have lobbied for him to end up on IR because he was a threat to Delhomme's stranglehold on the starting QB position and putting him on IR was a way to guarantee his starting job...either way, he is an experienced veteran who has been with Carolina going on two seasons now.

But we haven't seen him start a game in a Panthers uniform. He never got a chance, really. So does he stay? I think the Panthers should keep him. The depth chart going into training camp, to me, should look like this:

#1 - Matt Moore

#2 - Josh McCown

#3 - Rookie

Bill Parcells had brought him into Miami to be the starting QB until Chad Pennington became available, and I think that speaks volumes for him. He never got a chance here and I think he deseves one, at least to compete for the starting job behind Moore next year. And I think it goes without saying, I'd be more than thrilled to see Delhomme cut, but that'll only happen if Fox is gone.

If he really thought he was starter material do you think he would have traded him when all he got was a 7th? That would be a pretty lousy deal to me.

They had 4 QB's once they signed Pennington, and it was either cut him, or get what you can get for him. Henne was definently going to stay, and the Panthers probably weren't interested in Beck. I think it was just what they could get for him over just cutting him outright.

I don't know if the Panthers will cut Delhomme. They are on the hook for 13 mill next year with him.

I feel like the FO will bring in a FA QB, like a Jason Campbell, who has never had a fair chance behind the Swiss cheese line he has played behind. I think they have to bring someone in like that. The only way Moore has a chance to start next year is if he plays lights out the remaining 2 games. Then, maybe then, the starting QB position is a possibility

Of course they didn't want Beck, I think Fox would draft a QB in the 3rd round and keep him on the bench til Jake retires, a la Green Bay.

Could be. I have never seen anything in him to suggest he could be anything other then at best a stop gap QB and I think Moore fills that roll better. McCown is expendable he wont be on the roster next year unless Jake isn't. Otherwise we are in the same situation as the Fins were as I think JR will force them to draft or pick up another QB.

The Panthers drafted a QB from Louisville named Stefan Lefors in the 4th round of the '05 draft...what the hell happened to him? Just a poor draft pick...that whole draft was pretty much a disaster outside of Thomas Davis. Now Cantwell, another QB from Louisville, might be in TC competing for a job next year. Panthers/Louisville connection?

Regardless of anything else, a new QB will have to be brought in. With the way Moore has played, he at least merits being brought back for training camp next year. McCown, all I'm saying, deserves the same chance.

Do you people so easily forget how loyal Fox is to Jake? No matter the contract/money in this situation, Jake will be on this team next year. What role he plays has yet to be determined, but I just can't see Foxy letting him go. It would be the biggest surprise move he has EVER made.

And I think it would be very prudent of us to keep Jake as backup no matter who starts.

I mean, it would be very prudent to read my post, because I said Delhomme would only be gone if Fox was gone. Thanks.

But yea, I agree, it would be nice to keep Jake around, if only he were cheap. He is being paid starter money and he will likely be riding the bench next year. That will probably be taken into account by Hurney and co. But I wouldn't want to see him starting...

I read your damn post, and directed nothing towards you personally. Read the WHOLE thread then maybe you will understand my post....but I doubt it.

Sorry you feel ignored..........wait...........no I don't.

    • I think there is good points in this thread to what the team needs to do. 1) Ball isn't really the issue but, he needs reigned in.  Coach and he need to realize when things aren't falling from the three and learn to play other facets of the game.  He's an amazing talent and when he's on, he's on.  But he can also shoot you out of a game.  We're lucky Miami went that way but that is too many missed threes.  He still needs to bulk up if he can, but he needs to drive more.  He's pretty good at finishing usually and hopefully the fouls come (probably not though).   2) The whole team needs to be more physical.  As others have stated, we need more bulk in our bigs.  Diabate is a hurricane of energy but cannot go against the larger centers.  I love him on the team but he should be more of a match up type guy or energy off the bench.  I think he'd be insane off the bench.  However I think the biggest issue with Diabate and Kaulk is the lack of offensive game.  The lack of a jump shot or anything.  Teams figured out to just leave them on the screen and crash lanes.  There has to be some sort of threat.  We need a 4 and a 5 that can do those things and stretch out the court. 3) Bridges.  He's just undersized.  However, I feel he really threw his all into it the last few weeks when others were gassed.  He was ok not being a focal point.  I'd like to have him off the bench as well but I assume he'd be traded to make things work.  4) Miller.  Dude can light it up when on, but disappears for quarters at a time.  Also he needs to work on ball handling and passing.  He's a turnover machine at bad times.  Also hopefully over the injury so he can bulk up too.   5) Kon. Just a rookie.  Long season and back injury.  I have no doubt he'll be back stronger and focused.  Needs to work on defense and physicality like the whole team but yes, a rookie he'll get there. 6) Coby.  Has to be resigned, no question.  The bench lineup is rough without him running the point.  Team has big potential and the front office seems sharp.  They seen the hive and how crazy it got and how much the city wants this.
    • I still go back to the beat writers having a read on Rodriguez IF he was in play at 19.  If Dan puts his nuts on the table and takes him, pretty solid job of keeping the secrets in house.
