I still laugh that people think the Saints were cap masters. They weren’t. They just paid their stars. We spent $61M on Teddy, Sam and Baker. We signed Olsen to a $17M two year deal after his first injury and got nothing. We paid $13M to Short after he hurt his should and like Olsen got nothing. We traded for Okung instead of picks and paid $13.5M for 6 games after he missed a season. We paid $28M to Paradis for bad play after a huge injury.

That’s $132M+ for bad results and I’m not even including the Chosen, Donte and Thomas deals. Include those extensions for below average and bad play and you are at $208M.

That’s why we always seemed poor and the Saints always seemed like they could do anything.

$208M for Teddy, Sam, Baker, Donte, Okung, Paradis, Olsen with one foot, Short with no shoulder, Okung’s last injury plagued year, unhealthy and bad Paradis, Chosen’s worst two years and the amazing Ian Thomas. That’s basically the entire 2022 salary cap spent on play we could have gotten from players on vet minimum deals.

They revolutionized how to use the cap. That really helped them to pay and waste so much money every year.

You are not really wrong about the rest. A lot more miss than hit for years.

They really didn’t. Spreading bonuses across future years has been done forever. Voidable years is a relatively new process but still like all bonuses as soon as the contract is done, it becomes a cap hit. We’ve been doing restructuring to turn salaries into bonuses forever. Other teams have gotten into cap trouble by pushing too much cap into the future years before as well. I don’t think the Saints are revolutionary. They are just our rival so we get pissed about their supposed signings while we get none of that, which of course is due to our wasting gobs of money on terrible signings without mentioning the other huge piles of dead cap and wasted picks.

this team has tried to build through the draft for 20 years. We're complaining about our GM's but you want to build through the draft. We just tried that with arguably what could be the worst NFL draft in the history of the sport if nothing pans out. At this point you get your QB, surround him with veterans, open the damn check book, and sprinkle skill position rookies for development in there.

I think I see what your saying, but to be honest I disagree with your point that we have built through the draft more so than other teams. In recent years we have been adamant on building outside the draft, ala signing Teddy B, trading for Darnold, trading picks for Gilmore, and Henderson, and trading up for Corall. We honestly at least in recent years devalued the draft. And even going forward we don't have first-round picks for the next two years. Building a team through free agency has never worked historically, and building through the draft has been the most proven roster-building strategy by far. Look at the Cheifs, trading all pro-WR Tyreek for 5 picks, and next year they win the Super Bowl. The 49ers were built through the draft and honestly hampered themselves when they strayed away from that strategy when they traded all the capitical to move up for Trey Lance. The only option going forward is to build through the draft and patch with free agency.

Chubb, Hill, Ramsey, Armstead are not exactly home grown talents…. They hit on McDaniel and he was their backup candidate as they wanted Tom Brady and Sean Payton

Trading for Chubb was a bad trade for the Dolphins, the verdict is not out on Ramsey. Chiefs trade Tyreek and win the Super Bowl the next season. I'm confused Arik Armstead was quite literally drafted by the 49ers not sure what your referencing there. Overall confused by your point, all the teams I mentioned were built through the draft at essentially all of their key positions minus Dolphins and Tyreek.
