Moore than just a backup???

A lot of people have questioned what Moore has done with his limited opportunities so far this year and some have even went as far as to say that the Giants were beat up and they had "scrubs" in the game. To this I would like to point out that if you would have told me Matt Moore would be starting without DeAngelo Williams (our best offensive weapon), Jeff Otah, Jordan Gross, and Dwayne Jarrett, then I would have really been worried for Moore's health and success in that game. It's obvious that this kid is getting better and better every game...even the players see it as I watched Peppers slap Moore's head in celebration as the young QB walked off the field. He is stepping out of that role as a backup and into the role as a starter. Don't take my word for it...let's compare some of the other backup QB's and how they have played so far this season.

Kelvin Kolb (1-1 record): 62-96 741 yards 4 TD 3 INT 88.9 rating

Matt Leinart (0-1 record): 38-56 339 yards 0 TD 1 INT 76.4 rating

Chris Redman (1-2 record): 69-119 781 yards 4 TD 3 INT 78.4 rating

Ryan Fitzpatrick (4-4 record): 111-202 1267 yards 6 TD 12 INT 63.3 rating

Chad Henne (7-6 record): 258-431 2738 yards 11 TD 13 INT 74.4 rating

Alex Smith (4-6 record): 208-344 2128 yards 17 TD 12 INT 80.2 rating

Kyle Boller (0-5 record): 94-165 876 yards 3 TD 6 INT 62.6 rating

Seneca Wallace (0-3 record): 77-119 683 yards 3 TD 2 INT 81.3 rating

I'm obviously leaving off a few backups such as Vince Young, Brad Gradcowski, and Josh Freeman for obvious reasons. Here are Moore's numbers.

Matt Moore (3-1 record): 71-115 891 yards 7 TD 2 INT 98.9 rating

Here's a few more numbers that are interesting...of the QB's listed Moore has the best QB rating, yards per attempt, touchdown/INT ratio and the best winnning percentage. Can we all agree that he has moved from the backup QB conversation and can now be looked at as a potential starter for the future???

Heres the thing. The way the Panthers are setup as long as they have a decent QB that doesnt turn the ball over they will win. Moore has done that but to just give him the starting job next year would be crazy.

Here's what I don't get about that argument.. what rookie would we bring in that would out perform Moore at present? We pick in the second and to draft a highly rated guy coming out we'd have to make a trade up that would make last years look like nothing. Fox/Hurney need to be kept on a stupid short leash during the draft if they're in lame duck mode and not be allowed to blow the next draft trying to win now.

What FA? Campbell? Jackson? Troy Smith? I LIKE all three of those guys, but I doubt seriously they outperform what Moore is doing now.

Delhomme will be on the roster as will Moore. They will be #1 and #2. We all know this, we just don't know the order. We've got one space left at #3. Honestly, just decide if you want to develop Cantwell or keep McCown. We're in trouble if our #3 is playing anyways.

I'm excited about Moore but I'm doing my best to keep it in check a bit until next year. I'd like to see how he performs at the beginning of the season. If he is still playing well 3-4 games in then I will be super ecstatic.

Matt Moore once shot himself ten times, just to prove that 50 cent is a bitch.

It's not a given Jake will be back. My perfect scenerio is to bring bring Moore back cut Jake and bring in a good veteran to battle for the starting job and draft a rookie.

So you would have the following

Moore

Vet QB

Rookie QB

Cantwell

This would be for training camp of course and then either Cantwell or the rookie to the practice squad.

If Fox stays, I'm assuming Delhomme does as well. And if he's here he won't sink below #2. Honestly, he might have a hard time sinking below #1.

Can't agree.

He's played real regular season games against good teams that have something to play for. I'll take that over someone who's still all "potential".

Competition? Okay, as long as going out to get it doesn't hamstring you from upgrading other positions.

TB- ran all over them

Patriots - lost that game

Vikings- sliding down hill.

Giants - not as good as advertised.

He has played good and made good progression. But I would not feel comfortable next season without a good backup and still take a rookie to groom.

You can say what you want, but he's done impressive things since the 4th quarter of that Vikings game.

Right now, it looks to me that Matt Moore has really begun to settle in, and the coaching staff has let him take some shots downfield. This is where his game is the best. This is why he's a good fit for us.

He is pretty good in the pocket, and can pick up the first down when we need him to. He can also threaten downfield with play-action. Like Fiz said, Matt Moore is 25. There is no other project or QB you get. You get a good veteran to help him (not Jake) and then you're good. If you don't like Matt as your QB, you let him go. If you don't want him to start, and you want another project, it's time to let Matt hit free agency.

Outside of Peyton, there aren`t many that can carry the team without a fair amount of help.

Rookie to groom? All for it. Just not sure we`ll be in position to get one :(

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
