Jason Campbell vs Clinton Portis

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Highlights: Portis says Campbell isn't a leader, while Campbell says Portis doesn't work hard.

Mike Shanahan is in Washington to cure the Redskins offense. But the team's biggest names still have some issues to work through.

Speaking on ESPN 980's "John Thompson Show" Wednesday Clinton Portis defended his relationship with Dan Snyder and said what a great teammate he is. Then he threw his quarterback under the bus, criticizing Jason Campbell's leadership and handling of his captaincy.

If we printed all the the insulting things Portis said, this would be a very long blog post. (Although he probably doesn't think are insulting because he doesn't get it.) So we point you to the Washington Post to check it them all out. It's fascinating stuff.

Campbell, informed of the comments, had enough. Portis' attitude for a now mediocre player is galling from afar. It has to be infuriating for the players who actually show up to practice.

"How is he going to say I'm not a leader?" Campbell said in a phone interview. "I mean, that's just not true. To me, that's somebody who shows that they don't know what a real leader is. A leader is not someone who leads by the wrong example. A leader is someone who is trying to do the right thing and trying to lead by example, and not just [being] about themselves.

PFT: Jason Campbell finally blasts Clinton Portis

Safe bet one (or both) of these guys isn't coming back next year. Looking at who the coach is, probably a safe bet Portis is gone. Campbell is 50-50.

    • Kalkbrenner and Sion James received regular contracts and not two ways, so the Hornets have some work to do to cut the roster size down.
    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
