His first draft is handicapped.

It will be interesting to see though if Canales can get more out of the picks, we have than Reich and Rhule did.  Making Ekwonu more of a downhill blocker, and Horn staying healthy would help a lot.

Rams didn’t have a first in the last draft and may have had the best draft outside of Houston who had multiple 1sts. We need to get two above average starters at 33 and 65. It’s the only way we have a chance to improve. If we get a Mingo at 33 we are in trouble again.

Morgan was the assistant GM so he helped handicap himself and he has to now get out of it.

It really sucks looking at the talent in this draft. It would be hella nice to have 1st overall and the Rams 1st as well as 33 and 65 (and Jalen Carter next to Brown, ugh). Williams, Powers-Johnson at C/G, best WR at 33 and best CB/WR/OL at 65. Oh well, Danny boy needs to lead us out of the darkness or again, no matter how good Canales is, we’ll be a bottom dweller.

Honestly, I wouldn't care if they select an o-line or d-line player. If they are truly rebuilding they would start with the offensive and defensive lines and work their way out.

Just got to go BPA. This is a deep and solid WR/CB/OT class so just get the best guys you can and hopefully it’s in positions of strength. We should be able to get a WR at 33 that last year might have gone 15-20 many years. Reminds me of the Evans/OBJ draft. That said a really good CB or OT/IOL could slip to 33.

We did stupid ass drafting the past 3 years (which worries me about Morgan) like going Mingo instead of securing a TE. We could have used one of the DJ Johnson picks to move up to 33 and leap frog Detroit for La Porta. Instead we take a WR that this year is easily a 3rd rounder+. We need to stop poo like that. Take a TE in a strong TE/weak WR draft and take WRs in a strong WR/weak TE draft.

I couldn't tell you anything about this year's class coming out.  I just saw an early top 32 in the banner streaming in nfl network and it looked like it was heavy on defense in the first.  There were 3 or 4 qbs, cannot tell you who other than Williams, Maye and NIX. Williams and Maye were the top 2 and Nix was somewhere around the Saints or Rams.  Had 3 WRs i think and the rest were defense and maybe a TE or 2. I will have to look more closely the next time I watch.

Best thing for us is if there somehow are 5 QBs (Nix and Penix) in the first. The WRs in the later 1st to mid 2nd are all over the place depending on who likes who. Harrison Jr, Odunze and Nabers are all looking like top 10ish guys who won’t be close to 33. After that it’s a guessing game until the combine/workouts.

Here’s the WRs that I’ve seen in the first in one or more mocks: Coleman, Legette, Taylor and Franklin. Walker, Mitchell, McConkey and Worthy have all been at 33ish in mocks as well. I don’t foresee all 11 going in the top 35, but it’s a deep class.

I tend to focus on the top 50 rankings and not draft mocks.  After the 1st has been completed then I go back and look at the top 100 and see how it matches and who's left on the board. Mock drafts rarely ever get the top 10 right much less the entire 1st round.

It really doesn’t matter if Morgan can’t put together way better drafts than he took part in with Fitterer.

If the drafts don’t get better, this team won’t be competitive even if Canales is a great coach.

True.   Also, Morgan could throw a dart at a board and have better drafts than Fitterer.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
