IW loses Call of Duty

This is what Activision does: Get a blockbuster game and then get every penny they can get out of it until its no longer profitable, it happened with Tony Hawk, it's happening to Guitar Hero, and it will happen to COD. By the time the Xbox 720/PS4 is out Call of Duty will be a memory

That's the thing though. If they came out with a Modern Warfare 3 tomorrow, it would become the best selling game since MW2. The franchise is still extremely viable and profitable.

It would sell, but I think all the hacks and mp cheats will have turned off a lot of people from it. Plus B: BC2 is out...It's awesome, I've enjoyed it much more then I did mw2

Btw I forgot to mention that I read an article about a month and a half back where they were talking about how IW was going to give the final instalment of MW to another developer which at the time was rumored to be the dead space developer(now confirmed), and begin work on a new IP.

I doubt the 2 guys getting canned had anything to do with IW not doing MW3, and it was more of a their choice thing then not.

But hey where would the shock value article be with the full story.

Yea, they always do that with their games, they start the series (while having the game rights being bought to have it published.) Then do a few games, then start another series....

Medal of Honor

I like Call of Duty so I'm going to totally agree with the employee's side because I totally know the whole story.

Okay.

I'm not saying I agree with Activision's actions, but I don't disagree either. Don't know the whole story.

IW screwed up COD for the PC! PC is what made COD famous. You can't alienate a large and loyal base and think everything is gonna be ok. Ive been playing COD since the very first one and let me tell you MW2 was retarded...great graphics, fun story....RUINED by multiplayer. There hasn't been that much hacking in game since Counter Strike.

Same here. I played the COD series exclusively until MW came out. MW was a fun game, hated to match in it. MW2 is crap. I will agree that UO was probably the best one with COD1 right behind it. You could really see IW/Activision's philosophy change with COD2. I liked COD2 but they really dumbed it down. After COD2, I got sick of the PC bs that Activision did to us PC gamers and quit FPS games all together. I still play some but rarely. I can now thank Activision for being in MMO hell as I have been playing LOTRO since it came out.

Agreed! the NO Dedicated server fiasco really ruined MW2 for me. I have to have a computer find a server match for me, like I cant do that myself. And then I have to wait 20 minutes for it to find one, and then when I get on there's hackers everywhere and VAC cant ban them. There are no admins, people are admitting they are hacking and IW nor Steam will do anything about it. They said "VAC will take care of it, DO NOT SEND US anymore complaints/videos/screenshots of potential hackers" I see about 4-5 hackers a night, and I cant quit cause if I do I lose all my XP points for that match. Its stupid. [/rant]

Cod:UO is still the BEST COD PC game out there IMHO.

Costs are too high right now because of the economy and massive lay-offs 9even in my industry). It sucks but that is the reason. Almost all of the companies that have games that do not require dedicated servers are all going this route.

P.S. Bobby Kotick needs to burn in hell. I should know I used to work for him.

ex IW execs suing Activison.

"This lawsuit is solely and regrettably the result of the astonishing arrogance and unbridled greed of defendant Activision," the suit begins, before getting to the accusations at the heart of the dispute. The developers are accusing Activision of launching a bogus investigation into the pair's activities specifically for the purpose of firing them and evading contractual obligations, as well as royalty payments set to begin March 31.

In detailing the investigation that led to their exit from the company, West and Zampella claim that Activision refused to tell them what they were being investigated for, "insisting instead in Orwellian fashion that West and Zampella 'already have a clear understanding of what they have or have not done.'" The publisher's investigators are accused of using strongarm tactics, including a six-hour "interrogation" in a windowless conference room over the President's Day weekend.

Additionally, West and Zampella said Activision representatives interviewed other Infinity Ward employees so doggedly it drove them to tears, and then told the pair they would be guilty of insubordination--grounds for termination--if they attempted to console the employees. The suit also claims that Activision insisted that West and Zampella turn over their personal computers, cell phones, and other such devices for review. When the pair cited their right to privacy, they were told that asserting that right would be considered insubordination.

Beyond the investigation and the way it was conducted, West and Zampella are also accusing Activision of trying to back out of a 2008 agreement with the developers. Under the terms of that deal, West and Zampella would extend their contracts until October of 2011 and deliver the finished version of Modern Warfare 2 by November 15, 2009.

In return, the publisher promised to give the pair creative control over any Call of Duty game set after the Vietnam era (including near-future and far-future versions) or using the Modern Warfare brand. West and Zampella also claim the agreement gave them the right to run Infinity Ward independently of Activision (while remaining a wholly owned subsidiary of the publisher), to develop a new intellectual property after finishing Modern Warfare 2, as well as increased compensation in the form of stock options and royalties for all Call of Duty games, as well as non-Call of Duty games that are built using Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare engine.

"Activision has adopted the corporate strategy of forcing Messrs. West and Zampella to sue for their pay--in the hopes of either getting away with not having to pay them anything, or maximizing its leverage to reduce that pay," the suit alleges. "Such actions are not surprising, given that Activision is run by a CEO who has been publicly quoted as believing the best way to run a videogame studio is to engender a culture of 'skepticism, pessimism, and fear,' and who prefers to pay his lawyers instead of his employees."

West and Zampella are demanding $36 million in damages (as of the date of the filing), future royalties, legal fees, and a judicial determination of their rights to creative control of the Modern Warfare brand, as well as their rights over the Call of Duty brand, as stated in the 2008 agreement.

This is so true, I hope that the execs win that lawsuit with Activison...Just based on his comments on what he wants developers to feel like when making a video game........
