The Curious Case of Canales’ Coordinator

Brad Idzik was born in Durham. He moved to Washington at some point as a kid. He’s from a football family. His grandfather coached in the nfl. His father was on the front office staffs that built the original bucs Super Bowl team. He spent a lot of time in Seattle in various roles. His career culminated in a disastrous two year stint as the Jets general manager between 2013 and 2014. That team was old and needed a tear down and rebuild and he did half of that. His 2013 draft included a certain qb who was so hated by his teammates that he had his jaw broken in a locker room right, but more on that later.

Brad graduated from wake forest and, as is often the case for sons of nfl men, went to work following in his father’s foot steps. There’s not a lot of information on him out there. he started as a grad assistant at Stanford. In 2019 he ends up in Seattle as a wide receivers coach. He reprised the role the next year. In 2021 his role changed to assistant quarterbacks coach and even an “offensive quality control coach.”

now quality control coach can mean a lot of things; it’s just a title. Some people who played football here probably remember their Get Back Coach: a coach who’s job it was from keeping excited players on the sidelines and not getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. For some it’s more just like watching film, categorizing it, looking for whatever etc.

one thing is for sure: getting titles at that point in his career is not a demotion. Just like the corporate world, adding a title doesn’t always mean more pay, but it does mean more work. losing a title is considered a demotion. A public one.

In his new role he would be reporting directly to offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and passing game coordinator Dave Canales.

Canales basically followed Pete Carroll for a decade. Spent seven years as a WR coach, two as a qb coach, and heading into 2021 he was promoted to “passing game coordinator.”

now again, titles like these don’t always mean things. Sometimes a title like this is considered a promotion to keep other teams from poaching someone. “Well you can’t interview him to be offensive coordinator because he our passing game coordinator!” Sometimes it’s to justify a raise to keep a coach from taking an interview. All we know is that he went from WR Coach to QB coach to passing game coordinator. And the guy that had his OLD job is a fresh faced, supple, late twenties Brad Idzik.

For the record, WR/TE coach to QB coach to Coordinator is a very common career progression. You can imagine how responsibilities increase, game planning increases, lonely hours at the facility increase……

Canales and Idzik are both outspoken evangelicals. Now don’t worry I’m not going to  go into how weird evangelicals are here, except to say they’re notorious for their hiring practices: all evangelicals all the time. Brad, well, he’s not a theologian.

So at this point it’s The 2021 season. Russell Wilson is kinda falling apart and will get traded to Denver in a huge fuging heist. I’m not gonna blame them for Wilson’s regression, just like they don’t get credit for his success. For the season, it’s presumably Canales and Idzik working for Waldron, trying to get the ship righted. Long……lonely nights….lots of stress…close proximity to one another. Couple evangelical guys who feel they can’t really talk to anyone else at work… get comfortable with each other. Safe. Secure.

see this was originally going to be about how evangelicals hire incompetent people, and it still is. It’s just way funnier now.

Prior to the 2022 season, Dave canales releases a book detailing his infidelity. He drags his poor wife around the country on a book tour about how actually it made his marriage STRONGER (one weird trick). This is sicko poo to most of us but there’s a huge grift for poo like this in the evangelical community.

anyway, the book details how the stress of the job led him down a path of the evangelical big three: porn, alcohol, and infidelity. He was cheating on her since before the marriage. He stated he realized he was a narcissist. that is what every single marriage counselor is going to call every cheating husband. Those are the only people that actually diagnose narcissism by the way, because it’s the only time someone with those cluster b traits ends up in therapy.

notably from his book, Canales stated….

” … the long hours as an NFL assistant coach weren’t to blame for his issues but gave him more opportunities to make bad decisions.”

Hmmmmm.

the book was released in September of 2022. Prior to this, Canales was demoted from pass game coordinator to quarterbacks coach. Brad Idzik was dumped back down to WR coach and lost his “offensive quality control assistant” title. In 2022 something clicked on offense and reclamation project geno smith had a career resurgence…the guy drafted by Idzik’s dad (remember that?)

After the 2022 season Canales took a promotion and ended up as the offensive coordinator in Tampa bay. He brought one person with him: Brad Idzik. Idzik worked as WR coach and undoubtedly worked closely with Canales. Side note: Tampa bay is one of the biggest cities for swingers/ENM in the south east. The other big one? Greenville.

we know the story of the 2023 and don’t need to go into that in depth here. Short story: neither the whole product or bakers performance was that impressive.

Canales was hired by the panthers to be their next head coach. No one else wanted an interview. He hired a few assistant coaches from other positions, then hired Idzik from the bucs to be his offensive coordinator.

Idzik will not be calling plays, however. I presume Canales will hold on to those duties. Sweet gig tho.

Now I’m sure a bunch of you are sprinting down to the poop emoji because I just listed the publicly available information about their career trajectories. But as an experiment, for those guys here with a wife or partner, read them this recap:

the panthers offensive coordinator and head coach are both weirdo evangelicals who were both demoted following a season that led to one of them writing a mea culpa book to his wife about his infidelity. As far as I can tell Canales had no ties to the bucs and switched sides of the country which sounds exactly like what you’d do if you were trying to keep a marriage together and to prove you were “serious about this.” And the one coach he brought with him? Yeah. Idzik. And now he’s in Carolina and the guy he brought with him and promoted? Yeah, Idzik.

See what your partner/wife says they were doing. See if she even hesitates.

given the rumors about the leisure activities of members of the panthers ownership group, well….

The panthers under tepper have been mostly incompetent. Get ready for them to be scandalous as well.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
