Was listening to the radio on the way home and he was on Primetime (there wasn't much else to choose from), and I always like to hear what he says based on his experience and sources.

He concurred with Pack that basically it sounded like Hurney wasn't looking at doing anything extra with the 20 Mil we saved from not paying Pep. They talked about how basically that money would just go to tying up guys like Thomas Davis and Matt Moore.

Lombardi said by our front office's actions last season, that it was obvious we were "all in" for a Super Bowl run last year, and now with the moves we made, we're kind of stuck in no man's land.

He said it's going to be really hard to improve with the money we're using to re-sign our own guys to go out and get anyone else of value. He doesn't expect us to be real active in free agency.

He also said that he thinks if we could go back we wouldn't have traded our 1st rounder for Everette Brown. Basically, he said we were locking guys up like Jake, and putting the tag on Pep to keep them here for last season believing this team was a Super Bowl winner, and now that it wasn't we're not in good position to improve.

He said Jake is "unreleasable" b/c of his contract and that was definitely a questionable move as to why that was done when it was.

One thing I kind of liked that he said was about Anquan Boldin though... When asked about him, he said Boldin could absolutely help our team this year and there is no question he would be worth a 3rd rounder b/c you won't get that value out of a 3rd rounder this year. He said the thing that is keeping everyone away from him though is that he is 30, has durability issues and wants Top 10 WR money, so the contract would be a definite problem.

He added that we need a guy like that to compliment Smitty b/c we need someone that can get themselves open on 3rd downs and run crisp routes to find holes in the defense (he said we were a lot like the Patriots, I'm assuming in regards to Moss getting help from Welker).

To sum it all up, he doesn't see how we're going to improve any b/c of money being tied up where it is and not having a 1st rounder. He said there was talk around the combine that it was going to be a rough year for us b/c both our starting tackles are coming off injuries, the QB situation, and we've lost both our starting DEs (although I think we've got two viable starters ready to step in).

(BTW, I think Randle El could come in help for 2-3 years for the right price too. I didn't realize he was only 30, seems like he was older...)

Just saying that's what he said. It's not like people on here haven't said the same thing.

I don't know where we stand for the coming year. I'm hoping that we do surprise people and trade for Boldin and make some moves after the debacle that was Julius Peppers.

If Moore is given the starting job, we are built to win with the run game and defense. It's a matter of adding to that talent. We'll definitely need some more depth at several positions...

the guy is just an idiot for making these stupid predictions before free agency/draft has started. how does he know the Panthers won't trade up to get a 1st rounder? he doesn't, simple as that.

I seem to remember this team called the Bengals that were expected to be like 4-12 at best and ended up 10-6 and making the playoffs.

Agreed. That's what I meant by "I don't know where we stand."

But, it does sound like it'll be hard to stretch the money we have across re-signing players and adding new ones that would have an impact. I hope JR really isn't taking the "set an example" approach b/c of the CBA.

I don't think the year is hopeless. We were a 12-4 team that played like a 4-12 team last year. We are a very talented and well coached(at least every other year) team.

Do you mean that we have lost two starting D-linemen? because we haven't lost both starting DE's.

No, Pep is leaving and Brayton will be unrestricted too IIRC.

      Not exactly sure that is an honest assesment of the talent he had to work with that year. Olsen had over 1100 yards that season making the PB, Stewart had close to 1100 total yards also going to the PB. He had Kalil at C who went to the PB, Trai Turner at RG who also went to the PB, and Michael Oher at LT who played well enough that the Panthers offered him a new contract the following year. I wouldn't call that a trash OL. He also played with a defense that was stacked with talent as well.   "The thing we are doing better this time around is actually surrounding our #1 overall draft pick QB with talent vs. asking him to completely carry the offense. I just hope that effort is leading us to realize that the guy isn't even good enough to get carried." Please.... Did you not read the list of names Newton had to work with his rookie season. I guess you missed it so I will post it again for you... Steve Smith (PB), Greg Olsen (PB), Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn JR, Deangelo Williams (PB), Jonathan Stewart (PB), Jordan Grossn (PB), Ryan Kalil (PB) on the offensive side and then he had Luke Kuechly (PB), Jon Beason (PB), Thomas Davis (PB), Star Lotulelei, Kawann Short ( PB ),Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy (PB ), Mike Mitchell, Josh Norman (PB)  For comparison, here is who Young had his first year.  Chuba Hubbard, DJ Chark, Jonathan Mingo, Adam Thielen, Hayden Hurst, Ikem Ekwonu, Chandler Zavala, Bradley Bozeman, Nash Jensen and Taylor Morton. Not a single PB player on the list and most of them aren't even playing any longer. Additionally, his HC was fired during the season and the defense was as bad as the offense.  You might not like the comparison but saying Newton had to completely carry the offense isn't exactly fair to the 4 pro bowlers on offense who played with him that year.

      That's why I say we have to keep looking. Even if you believe Bryce is the guy, KP and Grier are not and who knows if King is anything more than a gimmick player, we should be active in improving our 2nd QB spot. Season ending injuries happen, and you don't just want to roll over and give it up. How many starters have we seen come from the ranks of backup? Having 2 potential starting QBs is one of the best problems we could have.
