Was listening to the radio on the way home and he was on Primetime (there wasn't much else to choose from), and I always like to hear what he says based on his experience and sources.

He concurred with Pack that basically it sounded like Hurney wasn't looking at doing anything extra with the 20 Mil we saved from not paying Pep. They talked about how basically that money would just go to tying up guys like Thomas Davis and Matt Moore.

Lombardi said by our front office's actions last season, that it was obvious we were "all in" for a Super Bowl run last year, and now with the moves we made, we're kind of stuck in no man's land.

He said it's going to be really hard to improve with the money we're using to re-sign our own guys to go out and get anyone else of value. He doesn't expect us to be real active in free agency.

He also said that he thinks if we could go back we wouldn't have traded our 1st rounder for Everette Brown. Basically, he said we were locking guys up like Jake, and putting the tag on Pep to keep them here for last season believing this team was a Super Bowl winner, and now that it wasn't we're not in good position to improve.

He said Jake is "unreleasable" b/c of his contract and that was definitely a questionable move as to why that was done when it was.

One thing I kind of liked that he said was about Anquan Boldin though... When asked about him, he said Boldin could absolutely help our team this year and there is no question he would be worth a 3rd rounder b/c you won't get that value out of a 3rd rounder this year. He said the thing that is keeping everyone away from him though is that he is 30, has durability issues and wants Top 10 WR money, so the contract would be a definite problem.

He added that we need a guy like that to compliment Smitty b/c we need someone that can get themselves open on 3rd downs and run crisp routes to find holes in the defense (he said we were a lot like the Patriots, I'm assuming in regards to Moss getting help from Welker).

To sum it all up, he doesn't see how we're going to improve any b/c of money being tied up where it is and not having a 1st rounder. He said there was talk around the combine that it was going to be a rough year for us b/c both our starting tackles are coming off injuries, the QB situation, and we've lost both our starting DEs (although I think we've got two viable starters ready to step in).

(BTW, I think Randle El could come in help for 2-3 years for the right price too. I didn't realize he was only 30, seems like he was older...)

Just saying that's what he said. It's not like people on here haven't said the same thing.

I don't know where we stand for the coming year. I'm hoping that we do surprise people and trade for Boldin and make some moves after the debacle that was Julius Peppers.

If Moore is given the starting job, we are built to win with the run game and defense. It's a matter of adding to that talent. We'll definitely need some more depth at several positions...

the guy is just an idiot for making these stupid predictions before free agency/draft has started. how does he know the Panthers won't trade up to get a 1st rounder? he doesn't, simple as that.

I seem to remember this team called the Bengals that were expected to be like 4-12 at best and ended up 10-6 and making the playoffs.

Agreed. That's what I meant by "I don't know where we stand."

But, it does sound like it'll be hard to stretch the money we have across re-signing players and adding new ones that would have an impact. I hope JR really isn't taking the "set an example" approach b/c of the CBA.

I don't think the year is hopeless. We were a 12-4 team that played like a 4-12 team last year. We are a very talented and well coached(at least every other year) team.

Do you mean that we have lost two starting D-linemen? because we haven't lost both starting DE's.

No, Pep is leaving and Brayton will be unrestricted too IIRC.

      I'm not saying it shouldn't be a part of his game it should be present yes. But expecting 500/10 in the rushing category is not sustainable IMO. All it's going to take is a defender to be willing to sacrifice a penalty or a fine to send a message just as the Falcons did with Sam Darnold. And even as big and durable as Cam was defenses eventually started to try to send a message to him too. We have to be realistic about not putting our QB at unnecessary risk. Especially given the fact we aren't even willing to run a QB sneak with him. We've also invested a good bit in our backfield that's what they're there for. And furthermore ultimately whatever QB  tier Bryce Young ends up landing in over the course of his career it is going to be defined by what he does as a passer not his rushing ability. That's all I'm saying.

      His footwork has been discussed many times over related to not just within the pocket but the quality of his drop backs and how while his receivers have been an issue his own footwork has created issues with his receivers. It is a mutual give and take dynamic after all. As far as his deep passing goes I will happily admit I saw some very impressive long throws from Bryce later in the season and I said so at the time and I'm still saying so now. That doesn't mean that there still aren't issues and beyond some instances of him flat out missing receivers deep that he knows he needs to get corrected I think there are still some throws to the sideline that defenses are going to test Bryce on early and often and until he can prove he can beat defenses on those throws consistently they will play him the same way. As far as talk of Bryce being top ten and the metrics that define that different people are going to have different answers and I've said before after the conclusion of the 2024 season that I'm going to try to put yardage aside in some cases and just focus on what Bryce is doing both between the 20's moving the ball and how our redzone scoring percentage is looking. The biggest thing I'm looking for this season is scoring points. Not just field goals. Touchdowns. If the offense is moving consistently and reaching the end zone more often than not and not squandering drives and settling for field goals then I am going to be content for the time being. I do not expect miracles this season. I expect development and competiveness on both sides of the ball but particularly the offense trending upward given the investments we've made. And no blowout losses. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask do you agree? 🫡
