Rhys Lloyd is a Viking

Recommended Posts

Kasay last season was 5 for 6 from 40-49 and 9 for 10 from 30-39. In 2008, he was 11 for 12 from 40-49 and 9-9 from 30-39. So no he is not having trouble there. From the 50+ range he was 1 for 4 last year and 1 for 3 in 2008. And I believe a couple of those trys were because Fox elected to try a field goal instead of punting. Anyway, that's not that bad for a kicker from 50+ when you compare it to other kickers around the league. There's nothing wrong with Kasay.

except he can't do kick offs. you figure that he gets paid $1.75mil this year and the team will have to spend another 750k on another KOS which means $2.5mil on the PK position. for a team trying to save money that isn't doing to well. matt prater, the best kickoff guy in the league and the 5th best FG kicker only made $465k last year. olindo mare for the seahawks was th 2nd best kickoff kicker and a couple spots above kasay (who was 18th in the league) earned a little under $1.9mil.

think about that...kasay was the 18th best PK last year and doesn't even kickoff anymore. the amount of money that we spent on Pk last year put the team in the top 5 for salaries for the position.

it's only going to get worse. kasay is supposed to get $2mil in each of the next two years. his pay goes up while his production goes down. not sure he is earning his keep.

why is he on the team now? is it because he is one of the best or because he used to be one of the best and he's been here since the beginning?

You all are incompetent fools. Lloyd broke the NFL record for most touchbacks in a single season in the 2008 season...so he WAS the best at kickoffs. Hence he was worth the money because he is an NFL RECORD HOLDER.

Last year, as you would have seen- he battled a couple injuries- one in which he did while attempting to tackle- a job that is NOT a requirement for a kicker...but because our coverage sucked- he HAD to do so. Also a couple of kicks were what you call a "squib" kicks to keep it away from a good returner- because lets face it most of his kicks were in the endzone and people were bringing them out from like 5 deep! You only do that if you know the coverage is bad!

You all say that a kicker is required to do kickoffs and field goals- if you watched some of his ustream videos when fans asked questions to him...he is a kicker-he kicked field goals in college (at Minnesota) twice in the last few minutes to win a bowl game, was a full time kicker in NFL Europa and even was able to kick field goals preseason for the Ravens in '07 (and was 100% on every field goal that preseason!!!)- but beacuse he was behind Matt Stover (like Kasay) never got a shot during the season to kick.

In warm ups, he rarely missed and was good from 50+. Why we didn't use him in some of those long field goal attempts is beyond me, why we didn't see if he had a good field goal leg in preseason- when it doesn't really matter- is beyond me as well.

HERE ARE THE PLAIN FACTS: If you look at his official stats on the Panthers site, he lead the league for the last 2 years in touchbacks and he has the best endzone percentage of any kicker in the league, over the last 2 years.

Good Luck to Lloyd in Minnesota. I guarantee he will be their full-time kicker in a couple years, according to reports in the papers there- the coaches want him to be their man.

lloyd had a great '08 season but he didn't lead the league in touchbacks last year. he was tied for 4th with 21 TBs behind beuhler with 29 TBs and prater with 28.

so he set a record...that means we need to keep him around FOREVER!

meh.

fwiw, matt prater is an RFA this year and didn't get tendered. he was better than kasay and lloyd together last year and cost $465k.

think going after this guy makes sense? i do.

Coaching staff changes probably didn't want Lloyd. Ravens battled many injuires the year they let Lloyd go, and they ended up getting rid of Stover the following yr so he prob would've been their guy.

If you read my statement above i never said he lead the '09 season, I said he lead the last 2 seasons (i meant combined) in the NFL. They could have just resigned Lloyd at a lower cost...he is going to earn min. wages for his duties at Vikings- so panthers could have counter-offered.

"I spoke to the coaching staff today and kind of picked their brains on what they wanted from me," Lloyd said. "I think their ultimate goal in the future is for me to be the field-goal guy and kickoff guy. But this year is me purely doing kickoffs. Ryan is doing the field goals, and I'm quite happy with that. We'll take it from there." (minneapolis star tribune).

I am sure they will have to pay Baker some more money in his contract to fulfill kickoff duties, so we shouldve just kept him!

National Football Post:

The Minnesota Vikings have one of the top return threats in the league in Percy Harvin.

Now, they have one of the top kickoff threats in the league. If there is such a thing.

Kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd announced that he became a Viking this evening, capping off a free-agent trip to Minnesota and ensuring that he won’t get on a plane and travel to New York on Tuesday to meet with the Giants, as originally planned.

Lloyd, who played in college at the University of Minnesota, returns home. Sort of. The Golden Gophers no longer play in the Metrodome, but Lloyd will be banging kickoffs into the end zone for them. It’s a smart move by the Vikings. They just made their special teams unit much better.

Lloyd would have been a restricted free agent but the Carolina Panthers did not give him a qualifying offer making him unrestricted.

“Gonna miss Charlotte and the people,” Lloyd wrote on his Twitter account. “Next chapter begins now.”

Obviously a few teams see the need to have him...Panthers were the first ones to do this and others have followed, just shocked that they didn't keep him when they know he did well....no more ole'ole'ole'ole' :(

wasn't worth $1mil which is what he would have gotten.

If he was "TENDERED", yes he would have got 1 mil. Vikings signed him to a 2 year deal...minimum league salary, each year, for a guy whose been playing in the league 3 yrs now. So whatever league min is for a 3 yr guy....he wouldve been cheap.
