Chris Broussard: Will Larry Brown Be Back In Charlotte Next Season?

While we were putting the finishing touches on beating Atlanta, NBA Coast to Coast on ESPN showed part of the game and then started a segment on Larry Brown. I didn't have the volume up at first, but then when I did turn it up, Broussard was talking about whether LB would be back next year and the firs thing I heard when I turned it up was, "...won't be back in Charlotte next season..."

He then goes into how LB spoke with Sterling with LAC when we didn't know what was going to happen with ownership and he then said "I think Larry Brown will be back in Charlotte, unless the Clippers are willing to pay him and give him say over personnel decisions, then he may go to L.A." He also talked about how LB turned this team completely around and we're completely a product of his coaching, how he's done wonders here and all...

Then they turned it over to Jamal Mashburn who didn't acknowledge Charlotte at all or LB's work here, and instead gushed about what it would be like for LB to coach Baron Davis... BD hasn't lived up to his potential, can you imagine what it would be like to have LB coaching him, that would be rough, but great, blah blah blah! They also mentioned he might go back to Philly...

But again, Broussard said he thinks LB will stay unless he's paid well and has personnel decisions elsewhere. He also said how MJ was the only one that gave LB a chance after his bad year in NY and how he was out of coaching and no one was talking to him except MJ...

Either way, I don't know what brought this back up b/c I thought it died after MJ bought the team... It pisses me off, and I know LB is a rolling stone, but man, he's only been here 2 years and he's getting up there in age, don't you want to settle down after awhile? lol

I really hope he retires for good from here, years down the road...

only see LB leaving for family purposes, LB has a way of rubbing the people he works with the wrong way over time which makes this team the best for him. he can coach as long as he wants to, MJ will try to get the players to win, and he can do his thing without stepping on anyone's toes.

http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_nba/2010/04/larry-brown-headed-back-to-philly.html

New York Post NBA columnist Peter Vecsey reported this morning that Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown is already well on his way back to running the Philadelphia 76ers once the Bobcats' season ends.

While Vecsey's writing can be highly speculative, there seems to be some merit to what he's suggesting. A source close to the 76ers confirms coach Eddie Jordan will be fired quickly after the season concludes.

Brown's wife and two teenage children still live in the Philadelphia area. Wife Shelly has demonstrated no particular interest in moving to Charlotte.

When I asked Bobcats owner Michael Jordan about Brown's situation recently, Jordan volunteered that if Brown felt the need to return to Philadelphia for family reasons, Jordan would not hold him to his contract with the Bobcats.

Brown has once again been a quick fix to an NBA team's problems, getting the Bobcats to their first playoff appearance within two seasons of taking over as coach. But Brown is just as famous for being a job changer. This is the ninth NBA franchise he has coached.

I have frequently asked Brown whether he is committed to the Bobcats long-term, and about previous reports linking him to the Los Angeles Clippers. Each time he has played coy, never firmly answering the question.

Depressing... Can I be mad at him??? No. LB has done a great job turning the franchise around and getting us to the playoffs. He's done what he came here to do... For him to leave for family reasons is understandable. I can't be mad at him for not wanting to spend another year away from the family... I could be mad at the wife for not bringing her ass down too Charlotte!!! If the man has the job and is working, then you need to follow him where he goes.

Brown: 'I'm not coaching anywhere but Charlotte'

Addressing month of speculation, the Charlotte Bobcats' Larry Brown said the only coaching job he wants is the one he has.

"I'm not coaching anywhere'' else, Brown told the Charlotte Observer. "I'm not coaching for anyone but for Michael Jordan. He gave me the chance after that debacle in New York.''

Brown was addressing speculation linking him to potential openings with the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers. The issue came up again Thursday when New York Post NBA columnist Peter Vecsey wrote that Brown had received permission from Bobcats owner Jordan to leave for the 76ers after this season.

The Sixers might fire both coach Eddie Jordan and general manager Ed Stefanski after the season concludes Wednesday.Brown is often linked to the 76ers because he was formerly coach and president there and his wife and two teenage children still live there.

Brown said he hasn't spoken with Vecsey.

"They're bringing up old stuff,'' Brown said, referring to Jordan's comments in the Observer and other media outlets that he wouldn't stop Brown from leaving for family reasons. "I addressed all that a month ago. I don't know why it keeps coming up.''

Brown said he isn't looking to move, particularly with the Bobcats about to make their first playoff appearance this weekend against the Orlando Magic.

"I've had a lot of fun here,'' Brown said. "I'm not coaching anywhere but Charlotte.''

Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has granted coach Larry Brown permission to look for another job when the season is over.

This is what Brown does. He gets a team back to respectability and then jets for another rebuilding project. This time, he's being linked to the Sixers and Clippers. He is rumored to want complete control over basketball operations, something he could have in Philly with Eddie Jordan done and GM Ed Stefanski teetering. Brown's family lives in the Philadelphia area.

The Los Angeles Clippers will not challenge the Philadelphia 76ers in attempting to lure Bobcats coach Larry Brown away from Charlotte, a league source said Tuesday.

Clippers owner Donald Sterling entertained the idea of bringing Brown back to L.A., where he coached the Clippers to consecutive playoff appearances in the '90s, after Brown inquired through intermediaries about succeeding fired GM/coach Mike Dunleavy, multiple sources confirmed.

There is private speculation among league executives that Brown fanned the Clippers' interest simply to motivate the 76ers. Much has been made of Brown supposedly wanting to return to L.A., but he sold his home in Malibu more than a year ago and has no other remaining ties to the area. His wife and kids are all based in Philadelphia.

The preliminary list of candidates to succeed Clippers interim coach Kim Hughes are, the source said: ESPN analyst Mark Jackson, Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey, Houston Rockets assistant Elston Turner and New York Knicks assistant Herb Williams.

Bobcats coach Larry Brown denied that he is already planning to defect to the 76ers after this season.

Brown called the story "old news" before adding, "I'm not coaching anywhere else. I love [team owner] Michael Jordan." He couldn't admit being interested even if it were true, of course, and the Sixers can't even talk to him without it being tampering. Brown's family lives in suburban Philly and we haven't heard the last of this story.

    • Yeah unfortunately they signed up for another year of that too. What's worse an offense that can't score or a defense that can't stop the opponent from scoring? Wait it's both... Blame everyone is the answer
    • Summary (continued) Continuing on the topic of, "who has developed under Evero?" DJ Johnson, developed or not developed? AC Carter just got here to coach the pass rushers, but DJ Johnson has been here for three years and looks about the same. Jammie Robinson, developed or not developed? Trevin Wallace was atrocious and is a work in progress at best Chau Smith-Wade? Mike Jackson can be argued that he's developed Jaycee Horn has always had the talent, he's just been injured So who exactly has been elevated? Evero is a smart coordinator that knows his system very well, but he hasn't done a good job of developing talent. Was good his first season but regressed mightily in year two. Looks like there's no changes in year three. They have a lot of respect for Evero but do not understand the logic in just staying with the same product. You have to hold players accountable and develop them. Trevin Wallace played 86% of snaps. CSW played 71%. Those are the only two guys with a season or less of experience that got 50%+ or more of the snaps. Scourton got 27%, Umanmielen 12%, Ransom played nine total snaps. Canales is pushing for young guys to get more time but... isn't he the head coach? Yea Evero owns the defense but you're the one being credited for wins and losses. Based on his messaging though it sounds like he's having general conversations about it without really pressing the pedal down yet. Dave is going to wear this loss and how he handles it for a long time.  Credit to Canales, they have played most of the rookies on offense. Even Mitchell Evans got reps. If you're playing nothing but vets and they're not getting it done, then what benefit are you getting with the young guys not getting reps? Special teams was one of the biggest concerns because of the lack of talent and a "special teams star" but they had a good day on Sunday all things considered. Kicker was good, kick offs were tactical, and they returned relatively well. Had a punt land on the 2 initially before being downed within the 10. Good opportunity for the pass rush to get right against Arizona after logging no pressures against Jacksonville. MHJ had a good week 1, but Jaycee and Mike Jackson are also playing well in scheme and are bigger CBs McBride might have a day against Wallace/Rozeboom/Moehrig Gotta look out for Budda Baker at safety. Very worried what a mobile QB is going to be able to do to this defense that struggles against the run already. Do they just have Wallace spy Kyler all day so that he doesn't get eaten up by play action? Even if Kyler isn't a top-12 QB, if a team isn't disciplined and gets out of their run lanes/fits then he is going to eat them alive. More of highlighting how big of a problem McBride can be. Jaycee Horn has proven one of the best CBs in the league and reminded us with the insane INT vs. JAX. WRs should be covered. Bryce had success against the Arizona defense last season. That combined with TMac's return to the state (though Tucson is about 90-120min from Phoenix). Could be a close game but if they don't play run defense or cover tight ends well it'll be another game where we look back and go, "Man... what can they do on defense?" The spotlights this season are on Canales, Evero, and Young. Getting a win in Arizona is a good way to shut us up until week 3, but for now it's not unreasonable to lean towards the Cardinals winning this. Alex thinks that Dave has a better day as a play-caller and that the turnovers get rectified. Points at the ugly turnover vs. Dallas and how Bryce bounced back from that to finish the season. Thinks that the Panthers bounce back and win 28-20. Through these first four games of the season, the team really needs to get two wins at a minimum not just for a chance at a winning season but also to be competitive. Fans also need something to look forward to for the home opener in week three. One of the few things to look forward to is TMac looking like a true WR1. This is also just one game. They're harping on the defense because it's been the same for the last three years. Also think it's fair to criticize Canales on playcalling and operation which were both erratic. Bryce Young, despite being physically fine as a passer, everything else was poor but there's also nowhere to go but up. That's what the veterans are clinging to and what the rest of the team needs to cling to. They're not going to get the benefit of the doubt nor should they. Canales + Young need to prove that the last 8 weeks of last season weren't a mirage and Evero just has to stop the run at this point. How they respond in week two will matter tremendously. Done!
    • lol this team’s so demoralizing we’ve started hating completely unrelated data nerds. Darkest period for the Panthers that I can remember.
