Charlotte Bobcats rise all thanks to Larry Brown

I think he either misjudged, or was misled concerning this market. From what I understand, a lot of the initial mistakes people continue to complain about were from Ed Tapscott.

bingo!!! tapscott tried to run this team like he was in dc, alot of people i know were turned off by tapscott and his senior staff. many of them had nba ties but had liitle knowledge of this market. I"m gald MJ convinced bob to hire fred whitfield, he did the best he could do with the arena naming rights/tv mess created by c-set failure, and has slowly increased sponsors(i heard the number of sponsors are up 30 from last season). and as a former season ticket holder with the hornets he understands the in and outs of dealing with the power brokers in this town, hopefully the cats will continue their upward trend

And the same people that were put off by Tapscott's marketing strategies pointed at his and his staff's release as proof that Bob was cheap.

That's why its hard to take any of these Johnny Come Lately's serious.

Just like with the Panthers. The influx of fans since 2003 has seriously degraded the fanbase. Now I get to watch it happen with the 'Cats.

i understand where you are coming from but we need people who are willing and able to spend the 85 to 100 bucks a game that it cost to set club level . i have already noticed the "panther fan" at games recently, you know the ones that leave in the middle of the 4th to get home early

This is where I'll give Bob some slack. Its pretty hard for most people to understand the Charlotte market.

that's why you hire people who do. really not that hard to understand, most fans in this market want to cheer a winner and be a part of the"in thing" to do. charlotte is not unique in this regard but we have a higher% than most cities

TRUTH.

Seeing thousandnaires try and speak and speculate on the moves of proven billionaires is funny. But when you've got no interviews or quotes from said billionaires, thats all you can do, speculate. The OP would never insist that John Fox deserves more credit for the Panthers success than their founder. Despite them having 1 winning season in 6 seasons before he was here and them having an "inept" 1-15 year directly prior. But because he has a personal bias against our founder, and has limited knowledge on the NBA and the Bobcats, we get looney tune statements like the ones above that tell us alot more about him than they do our Bobcats.

Well, I'll agree to disagree. Most people in Charlotte nowadays are transplants that root for the Celtics or wherever they came from. Beyond the certain percentage of Charlotteans from the 70s-early nineties (including myself), it can be difficult to draw even if they are winning in my opinion. Sure, more people will come to the games, because we are good, but we need some better marketing strategies if we actually want to gain a bigger fan base.

I'm not dissing the team. They have honestly grown on me...but they need a plan to market the team in the offseason.

If they could just get them onto a "broadcast" channel where everyone in NC and SC could watch 60% or more of the games, that would make all the difference in the world.

bingo. Thats pretty much what I was alluding to.

KT, I have a serious question for you.

We all know how passionate you are about the Bobcats, and that is great.

But, answer me this....honestly please.

If the Charlotte franchise had been given to Larry Byrd's group instead of Bob Johnson's, would you still feel the same way you do about the Cats? Would you defend everything they do to the death, like now? Do you love the Cats? Or, do you love the Cats because their owner was and is African American?

Interested in your comments.

    • I think his stats will depend on the development of the rookies and sophomore receivers, which isn't totally under is control. The eye test is a different story. Has to consistently look the part before you decide to pay him Purdy money.
    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
