naw ya don't have to have a pro bowl receiving group, just a deep one. offensive line and running back would take a backseat since they're not as important. your qb is in a shotgun and gets rid of the ball quick. your running back would be slightly undersized with good hands so he can participate in the passing game. we buff up our line and back positions. spread offenses would focus on qb and wrs. it's just a change of priority. it's not difficult if that's the way you want to build your team.

The only differance is finding talent that comes from a "pro-style" offense when you run a Spread is bout as easy as throwing darts at a draft board. Tyler Thigpen was a UDFA and is excellent in the NFL spread (BTW would the Chiefs have been considered a stock WR corp in 08). QB's would be a hell of alot easier to translate. Welker was UDFA. The talent is just easier to find today. I would be fine with going to it with a new coaching staff. I can't wait till Gruden gets here.

The spread offense is alive and well in the NFL. There are a number of variations that have been in use since the run and shoot run by Atlanta and Houston in the 90s. The WCO offense is a variation of the spread offense. So is the wildcat. Even we run one more than folks realize. Our version is a 2 wide receiver, 2 tight end formation that alllows us to either run or pass. We have lined up Smitty wide and Moose on the opposite side. Barnidge and Rosario/King were lined up tight and all four either blocked or went out on the pass. To be a spread offense it would more apply when we pass the ball rather than run but allows us to either run more traditionally or spread the defense with the pass using essentially the same personnel.

Complexity of defense(ie exotic blitzes), Speed of OLB and DE's, the monetary loss of your franchise player being open to big time hits (happens alot in spread), difficulty executing in short yardage situations consistently. Most importantly, fan base allowing time for your franchise to lose while you build this spread team.

Spread takes away max protection. Like Panthro mentioned with speed of LB's also speed and strenght of DL's.

Also, in college, the qb's are looking over at the coaches and NOT the Defensive formations. You can NOT do that in the league. You will be killed.

The spread offense does work in the NFL. The Steelers won a Super Bowl running it. Most of the comments on TV relating to the spread offense are for college qb's that come from a spread offense v. pro style and their transition into the NFL.

Most spread offenses in college rely on the offensive coordinator calling all the plays and audibles. Most of the qb's get in the spread or shotgun then look at the sideline for what audibles they should call if any. Also many spread offenses rely on "dump" passes rather than throwing down field.

As a result, most qb's in a spread, not all, don't learn how to read defenses as well in a spread because they didn't have to do it. Additionally, it is a lot easier to see your receivers in a shot gun v. under center when you have to drop back while looking for open receivers. This is why most NFL teams prefer qb's that come from a pro style offense: 1) they know how to drop back from under center and 2) they know how to call audibles and read defenses on their own because they have to make their own reads.
