RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Aaron Ward(notes), a member of three Stanley Cup championship teams, is retiring from the NHL after 13 seasons.

Ward announced his retirement in a statement released through the NHL Players Association on Tuesday.

Ward spent most of last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2006. He was traded in March to Anaheim.

The 37-year-old Ward was also a member of Detroit’s back-to-back Cup teams in 1997 and 1998. According to the NHLPA release, Ward had a third knee surgery after the season and wouldn’t have been ready for the start of next year.

He wasn't a bad player in his day but it was definitely his time to retire. Liked his hip checks and physicality but he always bitched out when it came to fighting. Didn't mind seeing him getting punched in the face by Walker when he played for Boston.

    • The lack of discipline has seriously been our downfall the last month. Seems like we just went off course this last month and Lee won't address it. You can't just live and die by the 3 when you can attack the paint and at worst draw a foul
    • Great season regardless of what happens. From starting out 4-14 to ending 44-38 is incredible progress and future is bright from here. I do think we can beat the Heat and then win on the road against either Orlando or Philly assuming Embiid doesn’t miraculously return sooner. But if not, a higher draft pick is nice too
    • I know a DT that's asking for a trade: 🤔 maybe a home discount can be worked out. Dan Morgan could create up to $80 million in space through restructures of stars like Derrick Brown, Jaycee Horn, or Taylor Moton. They could also include players like Tershawn Wharton ($18.6M cap hit) in the trade to balance the salaries. Carolina Receives: DT  Dexter Lawrence II New York Receives: 2026 2nd Round Pick (No. 51 Overall): A premium Day 2 selection that fits the for  Lawrence  after his 0.5-sack season in 2025. WR  Xavier Legette : A young, high-upside receiver who provides the playmaking depth HC John Harbaugh needs for his offense. 2026 4th Round Pick: Immediate mid-round value. 2027 4th Round Pick (via MIN): Future capital acquired in the  Adam Thielen  trade.  ----- Stone Forsythe* (another young player as a potential trade option)provides immediate offensive line retooling for HC John Harbaugh.    John Harbaugh's history in Baltimore proves he values draft volume over individual superstars.    Just my 2cents
