Our Defense Is Good

Our offense is not helping the defense with Time Of Possession.

Why we are throwing on first down so much is beyond me. You throw on first down, incomplete most of the time. Then after you predictably run on 2nd down for short yardage we're stuck with third and long which is most likely to be incomplete. The TOP on a possession like this is what, 1 minute or so?

At least if we run on 1st and either 2nd or 3rd we can have possessions that last 2-4 minutes or potentially longer if we can get a first down.

You throw on first down because the quarterback looks up and sees 9 guys in the box. If that doesn't work you run on second down hoping to get 4 or 5 yards so you end up in third and manageable.

You don't run on first and second down simply to extend the TOP a minute or two. You do it to actually get some first downs by run or pass. You have to take what the defense gives you. If you don't have extended drives and score points, you never win a game.

Oh I know. It's just that nothing is working for the O right now.

So we go incomplete on first down against 9 in the box, get 1 or 2 yards on second down instead of 4 or 5 and end up in third and long.

I was just wondering if it made any sense to commit to the run and hope we get 4+ yards per rush and give the offense some momentum. It's not like we don't have the backs to pull that off.

My point is that on drives that produce no points what's better, a 3 and out or a couple first downs and some rest for the D?

Regardless, the answer to everything is better execution.

Not to beat my own drum or anything, but, our most successful drive of the day came when we implemented this plan.

You mean that drum that netted us 6 points all day. With less than 150 total net yards, the offense was abysmal. Must have been a toy drum.

What I said about the defense was still true. We don't manage the edge with our DEs at all. Those long runs were totally because our DEs crash down to rush the passer and get caught up inside. Then the linebacker and safety don't fill and opponents are off to the races. By the time we shut that down it was way too late. Tackling was better but several guys including beason took poor angles in pursuit and special teams was pretty poor.

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
