2001 again? No, but this Carolina Panthers team is worse

I guess I should get ready for a Super Bowl in 2012 then?

Seriously, this team is way more talented than the 2001 version. On defense the strengths are different, but we're loaded. On offense, our line and backs are better, the receivers are worse, and the QB is TBD. The big difference is that in 2001, we had an offensive coordinator.

In 2001 we gave up almost 26 points per game. We couldn't stop anyone, and we didn't exactly light up the scoreboard either. Morgan and Jenkins were rookies, and our secondary, including linebackers, was a joke. That unit is the only one I can think of in franchise history that could make our current offense look respectable.

On offense we did still have Walls, but he was 35, and this year our Tight Ends are actually outperforming the group we had back then. We had Timmy B for five games, Richard Huntley, and Nick Goings running the ball. Smitty wasn't even a real option at receiver that year.

I don't see how the 2001 unit would score at all on our current team, unless they did it on a return.

And for what it's worth, it looks bad now but we've still got the 49ers, Rams, Browns, and Cardinals on our schedule. At some point we'll find an identity on offense, and once we do look for a decent winning streak.

Fowler just isn't worth paying attention to sometimes.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
