Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

absolutely. He's a fairly cocky quarterbacks guy. He's not more likely to hang his hat on one guy than take on a new challenge.

I also don't think with his 'love' for Pete Carroll that he's going to suddenly take up Pete's MO and try to get every Stanford player he can.

I mean, to an end what the new coach will do is relevant, but no one's talking about what Schottenheimer would do, or Dungy. The idea that you get Harbaugh to get Luck, or vice versa, it's already played out IMO.

I'll agree that you don't pick one to get the other (that could only really be done in one direction anyway). I'd posted a thread a while back asking people to choose if they could only have one or the other. Didn't do a formal count, but from what I recall the results were fairly even.

Disagree with you in that I can't see Harbaugh using the #1 pick on anyone else. Harbaugh has called Luck the best quarterback he's ever been around at any level (pro or college). And while I agree that could just be a coach pumping up his guy, I think he really believes it. If so, why wouldn't he take him?

For what it's worth, I think the most realistic coaching scenarios right now are Harbaugh and Grimm, so they're the only ones I'm putting much thought into. Zimmer could still be possible, but I don't think so. Looking more likely he'll be someone's DC again next year (maybe even ours).

RON RIVERA

Rivera2.jpg...Rivera1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Defensive Coordinator, San Diego Chargers

HISTORY: Chargers DC (2008-present) Chargers LB Coach (2007) Bears DC (2004-2006) Eagles LB Coach (1999-2003) Bears Defensive QC Coach (1997-1998)

DOB: 01/07/62 (48)

STRENGTHS: Defenses have always been aggressive. Emphasizes stripping the ball, so his units tend to force a lot of turnovers. Has studied under some great defensive minds (Lovie Smith, Jim Johnson) and was coached by Mike Ditka.

QUESTIONS: Has gotten head coaching interviews, but no job offers. Career at one point looked to be going in the wrong direction when he wound up being let go by the Bears and took a step back to be an LB coach with the Chargers.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Coached safety Chris Harris, who brought his ball stripping ways to the Panthers for three years before being traded back to his old team.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Don Johnson (not that one). Chargers defensive line coach was a co-worker with Rivera in Chicago as well. I also wonder of WR Coach Charlie Joiner would like to try his hand as an OC.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Competition, but I wonder how much there will be.

ODDS AND ENDS: Like Leslie Frazier, a member of the 85 Bears team. Like Panthers GM Marty Hurney, was a sports reporter (worked for Chicago superstation WGN for three years) before starting his career in football management/coaching. One of a very few Hispanic coaches in the NFL.

ANALYSIS: There might not be a bigger enigma among coaching candidates than Rivera. He’s been considered a potential head coach since his days in Chicago, but despite being interviewed more than once, his head coaching opportunity has never arisen. It’s been speculated that he’s a poor interview (only the people who’ve actually interviewed him could confirm that, of course). Whatever the reason, something hasn’t been there. There’s certainly the possibility of some turnover on the Chargers staff this coming season. I wonder if Leslie Frazier would bring him in as a DC if he got a head coaching job.

I would welcome Rivera if he brough the Chargers quarterback coach with him, John Ramsdell. Ramsdell has coached Philip Rivers, Kurt Warner, and Marc Bulger.

WINSTON MOSS

Moss2.jpg...Moss1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Assistant Head Coach, Inside Linebacker Coach, Green Bay Packers

HISTORY: Packers LB Coach (2006-present, given assistant HC title in 2007) Saints Defensive QC, LB Coach (2000-2005) Seahawks Defensive QC Coach (1998-1999)

DOB: 12/24/65 (44)

STRENGTHS: Smart, savvy, and considered a coach on the rise. Has experience in defenses with both 3 and 4 man fronts. Has a good history with developing young talent, including current Packers Clay Matthews and A J Hawk. Very well respected by players. Worked under Mike Holmgren for a year with the Seahawks, under defensive minded coach Jim Haslett in New Orleans and under Mike McCarthy during a period that has seen a resurgence by the Packers.

QUESTIONS: Another “assistant head coach” who hasn’t been a coordinator. Position coaches have been known to bypass coordinator roles before. The results are mixed (Andy Reid and Herman Edwards are examples).

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: The Packers current defensive coaching staff is a virtual Panthers reunion. There’s DC Dom Capers, DL Coach Mike Trgovac and OLB Coach Kevin Greene. Moss also has an NFC South background, having played for the Buccaneers (albeit well before the NFC South division existed) and coached for the Saints. Was a college teammate of one time Panthers safety Bubba McDowell. Currently working for the coach that former panther Jake Delhomme credited with teaching him how to quarterback.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Probably not any of the former Panthers, but secondary coach Darren Perry could be a potential DC. Moss could have a couple of potential OCs in QB Coach Tom Clements, RB Coach Edgar Bennett and WR Coach Jimmy Robinson. Another guy whose profile might conceivably suggest partiality to a West Coast Offense (though nowhere near as much as Sean McDermott).

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Per Pro Football Weekly, he’s on more than one executive’s short list of potential head coaches.

ODDS AND ENDS: Was the only defensive coach Mike Mccarthy kept after the 2009 season. The rest of the defensive staff was fired (including secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer). Barely missed being a teammate of John Kasay. Joined the Seahawks in 1995, the same year Kasay became a Panther. Was on a National Championship team in 1983 under Howard Schnellenberger, Also college teammates with Michael Irvin and Miami University head coach Randy Shannon on a Hurricanes team coached by Jimmy Johnson (Dave Wannstedt, Butch Davis, Dave Campo and Tony Wise were assistants). The Hurricanes won the national championship the year after he graduated.

ANALYSIS: A name that’s not as well known to fans, but is fairly well known to NFL executives. He’s already received head coaching consideration from both the Rams and Raiders. PFW had him on a list of assistant coaches that don’t get enough credit. Played eleven years in the league and is considered to be a good “player’s coach”. Unknown whether he’d want a 4-3 or 3-4 defense, but he’s done both. Definitely someone to keep an eye on. Might be one of those names that’s still around after higher profile guys have been picked over (or might not last that long, hard to say).

WATCH:

(audio quality’s not the greatest)

If Moss comes with Darren Perry than our defense will be set. Perry has already won a Super Bowl with the Steelers and as the secondary coach he coached greatness. Perry has coached Nnamdi Asomugha, Troy Polamalu, Nick Collins, and Atari Bigby.

I think it maybe safe to say that the Only primary Potentials that we have is only harbaugh and Grimm. I mean who else, Unless Carolina will try to Aim after Gruden ,Billick, or Cowher. Withch i dont think will happen but the lack of coordinators staying with the same team like frazier an Garrett an more likely to Happen Zimmer there is a chance that it might open up the door for those guys. But with zimmer i really believe he will get his chance, time will tell.

Also you have to look at Ron Rivera an a couple of others.

But we might already have a short list with Russ Grimm an Harbaugh "Maybe"...

So to add on my new short list is this

1. Russ Grimm

2. Jim harbaugh

3. Rob Ryan

4. Perry Fewell

5. Ron Rivera

6. Brian Schottenheimer

My Dream Scenario

Coach. Harbaugh / QB. Clausen

I don't think Zimmer's really on anyone's radar right now. He probably won't get interviews.

Grimm, as much as he might make sense in various ways, I'm just unimpressed.

For head coach? I think he'll get one for the Bengals job if he wants it. Outside of that maybe not so much. Then again, Fox got the Panthers job after a not-quite-as-good year in New York, so who knows?

Fair or not, the Bengals season has probably hurt his stock a lot. I don't blame him as much for the defensive woes because of A) injuries and B) it's the Bengals. With Mike Brown running the show, I doubt even Tom Landry could build a winning team.

Having him as Harbaugh's DC might be more possible than I first thought, but that would depend on Harbaugh.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
