Luckiest Coach

Yeah. Nobody could ever win a Super Bowl with a QB like Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson.

A flare up! With the best defense in Nfl history for one team,(plus you forgot Tony Banks went 5-1 before he was replaced by Dilfer) and the other with the coach that built the team taking it apart piece by piece, with another great defense. God, Jake Delhomme took us to a Superbowl, and I don't see anyone talking about him being great.

Name me one year where he brought in a top 5 ranked class of free agents. How about a top 10? Put any of the top QB's in the league right now on our team and Fox would be signed for a very long time. The sorry coaches even win with a good QB, look at Tampa for example. If you have a good QB, a kid could coach a team to a winning record, especially since the head coach coaches less than any coach on the team.

1995 through 2006. 2007 was the first year we didn't gorge on free agents. Remember the cap troubles we were having?

-How do you think we were able to finish 7-9 as an expansion team, then 12-4 the following year?

-The free agent spending in the beginning led us to a 4-12 season in 1998.

-Free agent spending cost us how many draft picks (Sean Gilbert)?

-How do you think this team went from 1-15 (mostly the result of bad FA deals) to NFC Champions in 2 seasons?

-After finishing 8-8 in 2006 (another big FA signing season) JR finally got smart.

Yep, you are effin' clueless about our team. Go root for the Cowboys.

Where were we ranked to other teams those years you are talking about?

People actually rank FA "classes"? I thought people just ranked teams or total offseason moves, including drafts & trades. Hell, I always thought of Fox as a coach that preferred to go with veterans through FA and only go after sure fire people he thought would be great in the draft. I've never thought of the Panthers as particularly cheap as a whole, just this year, and I understand the rationale behind it. I mean, can you really say that a team that pays Jake Delhomme as much as they did is cheap...?

Bringing in big names does not guarantee a good season really, as Dallas is demonstrating.

EDIT: As a poster pointed out above, often big names come with a huge risk, and a huge pricetag. The Panthers have signed some pretty decent names, but tend to go after proven veterans they think can make a nice impact immediately. Didn't we try for a couple seasons to bring in FA receivers to compete? Then there was the people who made up the strength of the offense in 2003; several of them were key FA signings.

Maybe our owner hasn't splurged hard on a player in a while, but that doesn't make him cheap. One could argue what he did this season does, but if his master plan works, we'll be in amazing position next season.

We didn't have that much of a roster turn over. Fox took the core we had here and a Retread Rodney Peete, then a NFL Europe QB, Jake D and won right away. If we had say, a Chad Pennington, Jeff Garcia, or a another solid retread, I think coach Fox's job would not be in jeopardy here, cause he is wanted outside of our two states. Like I said earlier, look at Belichick at Cleveland with no solid QB, it's like night and day.

I wouldn't quite call Tom Brady just solid, to be honest. It's true that having one of the top 5 quarterbacks in recent memory and one of the best all time can really be a boon, but there's so few of them. It also helps that they had a system to take full advantage of him really.

It doesn't make the team cheap that they thought Jake was a great quarterback and paid him a ton of money. They believed in him so much (and ify ou think Fox wasn't a huge part of this, well...), that they did pass on many other people who have been great.

edit: I don't believe Pennington or Garcia are upgrades over a functional Matt Moore. When Pick Machine Moore plays, though, yeah... =\

Cause the only difference between Cleveland and NE were Bob Kraft and Tom Brady

I respect your opinion a lot, but look at the top 10-15 teams. They have solid QB play week in and week out, something we have never had.

So are you arguing quarterbacks or free agents? Or free agent quarterbacks? In 2007, we brought in a Super Bowl winning QB and a #1 overall pick at QB. They were both outperformed by an undrafted free agent.... the guy who's starting at QB for us now. And you're obviously not happy with that guy or else you wouldn't make an ignorant thread. So, there's 0 for 3 in free agent quarterbacks in 2007 alone.

Who is the free agent quarterback you think we should have signed?

There was a time when we had pretty consistent QB play... Jake was not always a bad QB. He was never Tom Brady, but he played pretty well. I'm not disagreeing that we haven't had any consistency for a few years now, but John Fox had a hand in that as well, and I don't think that a "cheap owner" had anything to do with it.

edit: to googoodan, it seems he wants Jeff Garcia or Pennington. I'm not convinced either of them would have us much better than we are right now, but it's a possibility.

    • I respect his enthusiasm. Time will tell if it's warrented.
    • Oh I went off and fully entertained my wife last night as my emails go to her phone as well because of my health. So she got the whole conversation as it happened.    Like I went to games in Detroit for the cup finals, I've been to games in Greensboro, Raleigh, and Chicago as well. My mom and her nurse friend double dated one of the players from when the team was in Greensboro. "He's still with the team in some compacity as well." I know people who work for the team at the arena as well. How the hell would I not be considered a fan. Only reason I haven't gone to a game since 2022 is because of my health and money situation. Last game I went to was at United Center in Chicago and me and my wife spent around 1k for glass seats and some food at the arena and we were next to the penalty box. The pictures of the hurricane players I took are lost because my phone crapped out a few weeks later.
    • The Falcons win was a fantastic way to end the season and I think just about every Panthers fan would agree the team the coaching staff and particularly Bryce Young were impressive. We really needed that. Credit where it's due. At the same time. Now we have to establish it wasn't just a flash in the pan. We had one of those earlier in the season against the Raiders. As a tortured Panthers fan I have to acknowledge that. I know you're joking but in all seriousness I don't think the QB sneak is something for us to be concerned about in general but I would be lying to myself if I did not acknowledge that looking back at one particular game last season where we continually trotted out Eddie Pinero on 4th and short on the opponents side of the field we could use some creativity in those situations and it's also a matter of predictability. As time goes on it's something for Canales to work on and figure out. Especially with our kicker situation as it stands.
