If you were in charge. Who would you cut/resign/trade?

Trading is a tricky beast as it will amount to losing cap space. Again I feel it is a dangerous route to go as we will only be creating more holes to fill before we have a chance to fill our current holes. So we give ourselves mroe holes AND less cap room?

i agree with that, by the way, good stuff you wrote up there. I agree with it as well.

i guess what i was trying to say was i don't like just cutting loose players who still have some potential value to us. if we aren't going to keep them and have better options than them or a plan in place to get better options then try and get something of value for them.

i don't like having to fill holes that we just made if we don't have to and i don't like to pay for players that we don't have on the roster.

keyshawn is probably the biggest example in my mind of that. i am glad that we didn't cut his butt until we had jarrett on the roster (although we couldn't use him right away) but i hated that we still gave him millions after we cut him. i would want to avoid that type of thing altogether.

My main point of all the cuts is for one of three reasons. 1.) Other teams may pursue them, so it isn't worth it to match offers unless they are incredibly low 2.) Save as much salary cap as possible 3.) Get rid of unnecessary players.

I intended this thread just as much for a "what-if" idea to spark convo on specific players.

Well depending on the situation of their contracts cutting them might actually cause a cpa hit greater than what we would save. So unfortunately it is not as simple as cutting = more cap space.

None of them were unnecessary as all know our system now. That is usually invaluable as some players can take a season or two to adapt. Think of the continuity of our OL. Our back ups did so well as they have also been here for several seasons and gelled with the starters. Landon Johnson is the only exception as we brought him in to compete for a starting slot. He very nearly did not make the roster and Anderson was favored over him in some situations.

Only Hangartner is out of contract and thus we may lose him. If he does go then we should draft depth in my opinion. If he goes then we definately keep Bridges around.

Unfortunately we have very few players due to be out of contract other than the big two so almost all our current players will be back in camp. Unecessary cuts in theory works to generate more cap, but in practice they often end up hurting the cap space and especially hurt team morale. Sorry

Completely agree. He was ahead of Bridges on the depth chart at the end of the season across the board and only the niggle he picked up kept him out the starting lineup.

Problem is though he is probably one of the top centres on the market. Teams rebuilding their OL will definately look his way and some may throw decent money at him to be their starter for several years. So, due to that, would you be prepared to carry a starters pay check as a back up? That would be a lot of wasted money if we do not get any significant injuries. Money that I would probably envision going towards the DL. How often do you see an FO over spending on a back up C?

If I am real honest. The only way I see him staying here is if he loves Charlotte and loves this organization and loves playing on this OL. That way he will want to be part of it and not be swayed about a starting gig and the extra cash. Although would that mean we need to question his desire? Will he keep pushing himself to excel and to break into the starting line up?

there isn't a player around i would cut. i would try to package them up with a draft pic to try and get more picks, though.

trade hackett and a 6th for a 4th

trade lucas and a 5th for a 3rd

trade mark jones and a 3rd for a 2nd

those may be poor examples but is still just don't like cutting off players who still have some value to them if they are under contract. We will probably have to pay for them if they are owed money so why not try and get someone to assume the contract and debt? why not try and get anything for them? Just don't go into the hole for them.
