My final thoughts on him

1.Jimmy has shown flashes of potential and I like his decision making

2.Jimmy isn't putting up good qb stats right now, but I dont think its all his fault or even mostly his

3.Those of you who say he sucks will be proven wrong unless we actually get Luck/Harbaugh..cuz then he'll never have a chance.

4.Jimmy has his first multi-touchdown game against Seattle

1. The only thing Jimmy has flashed are male reporters in the locker room.

2. Stats mean nothing at this point- he simply does not pass the eye test.

3. As many times as I've asked him to, he has yet to say, "Yes."

4. Every team the Panthers have faced has scored multiple TDs, haven't they?

Is that his fault, Fox's fault, or Davidson's fault?

Moore didn't have a problem with it...even his rookie year they let him throw a little downfield. Clausen really likes throwing short routes like he did at notre dame in order to hide his average arm strength and awkward throwing motion.

My non final thoughts....

Only ND homers or the insanely stupid think this kid is going to be anything but an overhyped backup.

He has never been anything but media hype since HS.

one thing i want to get an answer on is this. what does andrew luck have right now that jimmy clausen didn't have coming out of college?

jimmy was an underclassmen that had two years of lights out college football in terms of statistics and a ton of hype entering the draft. just like andrew luck. both are lauded for their accuracy and neither have elite arm strength. both have been criticized for not progressing through their reads and scanning the entire field.

all the people that want to talk about jimmy being just a "hype machine" is making me laugh because andrew luck has yet to play a single snap in the NFL and suddenly he's the savior of the franchise.

i'm going to lay it out like this. i was dismayed probably more than anyone here when he drafted clausen. i watch ND football pretty regularly and was never sold on jimmy being a pro QB. just like i'm not sold on luck (i don't think he even declares this year). but i'm not going to just sell him down the river and not give him a chance to develop. he's a rookie and not every rookie looks awesome right out of college.

right now we have a lot more pressing needs. in the trenches we're god awful. on the offensive line right now we don't have a RG and we may not have a RT since otah can't ever seem to stay healthy. travelle wharton is 29 years old and isn't consistent. jordan gross is 30 and we all see how well he's played this year. we still have yet to get a proven second WR to compliment (hell at this point this WR is going to replace) steve smith. on defense we have no push up the middle and we are going to start severely lacking depth at corner.

with all these problems on the team, is one player ever going to make that much of a difference? do you think another rookie underclassmen with a lot of hype is going to do any better? with no 2nd round pick, can we really afford gambling with our picks?

when jimmy clausen went head to head with andrew luck there was not a single person on earth who argued who the best quarterback on the field was. although they lost the game (like they always did), clausen lit up stanford for 5 touchdown passes and 0 picks. i keep repeating this because i keep reading how luck is all of the sudden the savior even though he has played one good team and lost handily.

i am not arguing that luck is not a better prospect. he is on paper for sure. if nothing else he is bigger with better arm strength. accuracy in college was very similar... clausen's stats were better across the board but both were playing very well.

fast forward to today... i agree with most that clausen needs to get more vertical from here on out.

Clausen = Rick Mirer, Luck = Sam Bradford. No team is going to bypass taking the top QB coming out when they have the #1 overall pick unless they are ran by Matt Millen.

does one player make a difference? yes the QB does. Look at St. Louis and how they have improved with Bradford at the helm.

    • If we don't go OT, we will regret it.  What bothers me?  Are we going to get a starting-caliber OT at 19?  I think the draft is solid at OT, and the more I read up and watch video, the more I watch Lomu, the more I want him.   I see Freeling as a RT who needs some work in run blocking (since we need to run first, maybe not a good fit) and I see Proctor ending up as a Guard.  After Lomu (assuming Mouigia and fanu are gone), I think we wait until round 2.  In round 2, there are about 3-4 I like (Zuhn--good pass blocker and VERY underrated right now; Tiernan is a very good pass blocker as is Miller from Clemson, but both are not good in the run game.  Max Ixxxxx from Ariz St is impressive too---technically, there is not a of difference in these second tier guys--good in pass pro, need work in the run game.   If we wait until round 2 for an OT, we probably need to sign Nijman and start him early.   I almost think this is what we should do if Lomu is gone.  There is a big dropoff after him, imo, and I think we'd get better value if a stud ILB or edge is there.  Someone like TJ Parker Clemson makes sense. If Lomu is gone, trading back might be the play.
    • And what is x gunna help with except show him what not to do. Plus for the first year and a half he was just an obstacle
    • I understand that some people want WR. I am solidly against using yet another high pick there. Coker is pretty good and we used No picks on him.  What I think we really need at WR is a little bit of a Smitty lite. It is ridiculous to say let’s get a Smitty because you just can’t do that, but someone not tall and long striding but more in his mold. I think we’d have a pretty well rounded group.    Looking at tackle, with replacing Moton looming, it just seems like the no brainer.  You fill in Icky short term. Depending on how he recovers, and how the new guy plays, you go from there. A tackle at 19 is most likely either a LOT, a ROT, or a big talented guard, at worst. We will need all three in the next couple of years.  I would love to have a stud ILB be there at 19 but the OL is the responsible thing to do I believe.
