Hilee Taylor vs Dwight Freeny

Just wondering do you think Hilee has a some of the same skills, both are smaller but extremly quick. Given that Ron Meeks helped develop Dwight...can he do the saem thing with Hilee. If we lose JP Hilee may be the answer.

I think there's potential. I like the idea of getting a premo DE to hold up one end every down (or most of 'em) and then having situational guys rotate out. Taylor could be a beast as a passrusher, and brayton always seems to randomly end up in the backfield during snaps and stops the run. Charles Johnson has major potential too, IMO.

Meeks will help with Hilee, certainly... but I think whoever we select as D-line coach will have a more direct effect. Wait and see on that one, I suppose

Get out of here. There wasn't much to develop with Freeney. He was the 11th overall pick and was an amazing pass rusher in college. Maybe Hilee Taylor can be good but to think that Ron Meeks is the key to making Freeney is silly. Taylor was a 7th rounder.

You misunderstand my point. Of course I may not have made it all that clear...I was thinking that he would be used to having an undersized DE and how to put him in position to excell.

Justin Tuck was a 3rd.

Umenyiora was a late 2nd.

Mathis was a 5th.

Adalius Thomas was a 6th.

Darrell Russell was 2 OVERALL. We all know how that worked out.

I'm just sayin'. Draft position means NOTHING.

Hilee Taylor is far smaller than Freeney (250 to 268).

He's about the same size, or maybe a little bigger than Mathis though, so that's the guy we should be comparing him to, if we must compare him to a Colt.

To tell you the truth though, as much as I rubbed Hilee Taylor into the NC State fans faces (just because it was so much fun) he actually exceeded my expectations against the run. He pretty much held his own when he got the opportunity.

haha nothing?

spouting out a handful of guys who had an impact as late round picks doesn't prove anything. (late 2nd isn't a late pick at all btw). The percentage of first round picks success compared to 4+ is pretty big I would imagine, though people just like to give a handful of examples like Tom Brady, Adalius Thomas, James Harrison, Rod Smith and declare late round picks better.

Being a good pass rusher is more about the players around you and the defense you are in plus your individual talent.

Are you nuts Mintal? I would love to see Hilee Taylor re-define the position, as long as he's still in a Panthers' uniform when he does. I don't have any problem with where he went to college. But I think that his alma mater certainly plays a role in people putting him on a par with one of the best defensive ends in the game. :)

You know I'm just messin' with you, but as I recall, you weren't happy with the draft pick at the time. Probably more upset with the UNC nuthuggers than anything else though, I understand that. I'd love to see Hilee excel too, but mentioning him in the same sentence with as you said, one of the best in the game was surprising to say the least.

I wasn't unhappy with the pick, but I was taken aback by the overreaction to it at the time. Apparently there's still a little of it floating around... ;)

Seriously, he's not a Tarheel to me, he's a Panther. I want him to excel. I don't think it's too likely, but it will be a hell of a nice surprise if he does.

    • That might balance out because apparently the Texans O-line is ass. He did manage to throw for almost 300 yards the last two weeks though.
    • Don't forget that Rhule actually took Tepper's offer to the Giants and they balked. He was just seeking the big payday which should have been a red flag. I have no idea how much time Tepper spends within the Panthers building. I do know that he in the past has been too much involved. He supposedly held weekly meetings with Reich. Then after firing Reich Tepper he held a press conference where he did virtually all the talking and made it about himself. Before that Tepper went out of his way to bloviate to the press about how he spoke to Bryce Young months before the draft and directly told him he wanted him to be a Panther. Then he went to the well of his selling point about Bryce being a point guard and we wouldn't need to invest in elite weapons. The guy thinks and talks like he knows what he's doing. At the end of the day the franchise has been in the gutter in large part due to he and his wife's involvement. It is what it is. Appreciate the convo.
    • Unlike most of you, I do not assume the FO thinks he is beyond repair.  For the first time since 2017 the Panthers have a chance to be in the playoffs. One more game will tie them for the most wins since 2018, 2 more wins will put them at 8 wins - the most in 8 years.  Hate all you want but a big part of that success has come from Bryce. He got them in the hole with Miami but he got them out of it as well and was a big part of that win. Against Dallas, he played very well throughout the game plus he converted on a 4th down in the final minutes putting them in FG range for the win. He may not have had a good game against the Packers but he did convert on two 3rd down conversions in the final minutes to help seal the win and of course the Falcons game was his best yet. Tepper likes him and they have a huge investment in him as well. You don't just throw that away unless you have something concrete lined up behind him - which I just don't see.
