Think about what you'd have to trade...

Mr. Scot

...in order to acquire Peyton Manning.

Now imagine that you're trading for Manning in his youth, with his whole career still ahead of him. Now what do you think you'd have to give up?

The answer to that question likely borders on the ridiculous.

But whatever that is, that's what we'd need to ask for in order to trade away the #1 pick if Andrew Luck comes out.

And if you'd be willing to give that pick up for anything less, all I can say is I'm glad you're not GM :nonod:

Herschel Walker trade 2.0

seriously though, I think that Luck would be able to get two firsts, a second, and maybe a good player.

I wouldn't trade it though. Would rather just take Luck and build around him in future drafts like the Colts did with Peyton.

That being said, Mr. Scot, if you were a betting man, what do you think the odds would be of the Panthers trading the 1st away? That is, if the asking price was met, but not foolish on the other teams part.

If Luck comes out, I wouldn't want them to trade the pick. That's kinda the point.

Can you seriously think of anything that would have adequately compensated the Colts for giving up Manning? I can't.

And yet I've heard people say stuff like "Hey, let's trade the number one and maybe we can get a guard, a defensive tackle and a receiver". Seriously? People think a guard, a DT and a WR would be worth giving up the next Peyton Manning? Thank the Lord they're not in charge :nonod:

I think those people's opinion of Luck is different. No one is suggesting that we trade the next Peyton Manning because they don't think he's going to be that good. I'm of the opinion that if he comes out we should get him, but people can look at him different and that's fine. You can't compare him to Peyton Manning like it's a foregone conclusion because it's not.

Ah, but what if he is that good?

No, we don't know the future, but think about it in terms of the potential consequences of each choice.

If you keep the pick and draft a QB who turns out to be a bust, yes it's bad. It's also something that a dozen or more successful GMs have done in the past few decades. A setback, for certain, but not an insurmountable one.

On the other hand, if you pass up the next Peyton Manning (or a guy who proves to be even better) then you are officially certified as the biggest moron in the history of pro football and, quite deservedly, laughed out of the league. That's the kind of mistake your career never recovers from.

Agreed. All we need to do is speak with Portland Trail Blazer fans and how they feel about their team passing up Michael Jordan.

So if we do trade the pick, the minimum return I would expect is:

1st

2nd

3rd

1st next year

2nd next year

good player

star player

That is the opening bid for Luck.

    • Down to Carolina and Washington for Ehlers.
    • Who are your top three breakout candidates for next season?    My three: Jatavion Sanders- Simply put he is the best receiving TE we have had since Olsen. We all saw his potential over that three game stretch prior to his neck injury where he showed a real connection with Bryce. Good route runner with glue for hands, limited blocking upside but he gives solid effort. With Tremble already being hurt I don’t see a reason why he already isn’t our starter and clear future at TE. Trevin Wallace- For a developmental LB forced into a starting role last year he  exceeded expectations. LB is one of the hardest positions to adjust to from college, and for a prospect who was widely regarded as very raw, surprisingly he was solid in coverage and only had an 11.9% missed tackle rate. He was overly aggressive consistently, and needs to work on his play recognition. But he is set up to be our best LB next season, and likely starter for years ahead. Even barring reaching his upside, his floor was clearly a lot higher than draft pundits assumed(Morgan can scout LBS). Cade Mayes- I am hopeful Cade wins the starting job at C this season. He may have been our most improved player last season, he looked like an above average starting C after he took over for an injured Corbett. He allowed 0 sacks on 327 pass block snaps. Corbett can not stay healthy, and at this stage in his career Mayes is objectively the better player. Mayes is only 26 and gives us the potential of stability at C, something we have never had since Ryan Kalil retired. Corbett slots in as a great backup C/Guard, and Cade continues to develop and gain more chemistry with Bryce and our stud duo of Hunt/Lewis.
    • Have to pair them like this for it to work, imo. Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Walker Ghosty - Chatfield    I'd prefer something different but that's probably what we end up with unless Ghost is traded to one of the 17 teams not on his MNTC.
