after jed york's exhaustive GM search he's decided to promote from within after interviewing two people lol

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that the 49ers will hire Trent Baalke as general manager "within 48 hours."

Lombardi interviewed for the job Tuesday, so it's safe to say that he has insider knowledge. Baalke is currently in his sixth season with the 49ers and served as the club's top personnel man in 2010, overseeing the draft, free agency, and in-season roster moves. It remains to be seen if Baalke has enough pull to hire a "big-name" coach -- like Jon Gruden or Jim Harbaugh -- as CEO Jed York is believed to be targeting. We wouldn't bet on it. The 49ers didn't have an actual GM and this guy did all the duties normally associated with it. basically they just gave him an actual title.

he was responsible for basically everything the niners have done the past few years, with coaches, players, drafts, etc.

we have experience with him from the Everette Brown trade.

His drafts have generally been terrible, he was responsible for dumping a truckload full of money on Nate Clements lawn, he promoted Mike Singletary, and had some say in the Mike Nolan hiring.

basically he sucks and his suckitude has ramifications for the Carolina Panthers in the short and long term.

    • We could look at that RB indecision as a catastrophe, or maybe a learning experience.  I mean, we aren’t going anywhere even if somehow TB falls apart and we don’t. Which I don’t expect. Meaning it didn’t really hurt us in a big way.  I understand what he was going for, he was providing a chance for a team leader to respond. He just gave it a game too much leash. And then fixed it.    What Canales does next time when faced with a promotion/demotion based on production may be more decisive.  I would condemn him if he doesn’t learn from it.
    • 89 is in very rare air and I have him in the top 3 best players this franchise has ever seen. Smitty wrestled every ounce of potential out of his body, but I see Tet with having a higher ceiling when it comes to physical traits. I agree, he has a LONG way to go before comparing his impact to Steve’s.  Nobody will EVER top 89 when it comes to dawg mentality, however.
