McShay Says Gabbert is a Possibility for Us Now, as Well as Fairley or Bowers

Said QB is an obvious position of need, and Clausen is what he expected he was, "Not NFL ready..." and didn't know if he would ever be a viable NFL starter. Said QB is the obvious, biggest need, and Gabbert is one of the most underrated players in the draft and spoke highly of him.

Said if we weren't going at QB then DL was probably the next most important area of need and Fairley was a better fit for immediate need than Bowers would be.

Cam Newton isn't even in his Top 10 and he never even mentioned him.

For the record, I think Gabbert might surprise but generally isn't anything to brag about, but otherwise, I think all these guys will be solid role players at best. Newton has potential, but I think has work to do and several question marks.

I still say no to Gabbert, just for the simple fact that their is a realistic chance at getting Luck in the 2012 draft. If not Luck, Matt Barkley would be an option. Either way, we should just stick with Jimmy so we can either suck and get Luck, or Jimmy surprise us all and show some signs of being our QB of the future.

I want AJ Green pretty bad on this team, but Bowers or Fairley would be a good good pick at #1. I still think it all depends on who the coach is. If we get a offensive minded coach, I see us grabbing Green. If its defensive minded, its Bowers or Fairley.

I still dream of getting Fairley and Marv Austin to shore up the DT spot for the next several seasons.

McShay has NOTORIOUSLY been down on Clausen, and is a total non believer in him. Obviously, with that opinion, he believes we should take a QB, and since Gabbert is his next best prospect, he thinks "Gabbert is a Possibility".

I think that is total garbage. Taking Andrew Luck is a different story. Hes viewed as a complete, blue-chip prospect that was way ahead of any other prospect in this draft. Obviously that would be an upgrade over Clausen.

But with Luck gone, the same logic doesn't apply to automatically taking a QB. There are a ton of believers in Clausen in the organization, and its quite obvious the Panthers are looking to upgrade on offense (see article below). Thus, I think AJ Green is the pick, which would surround Clausen with another weapon, who was a rookie this past year, by the way.

He’s planning to change the Panthers’ philosophy. For years the team leaned on a tough defense. But now he says the NFL is so offense-oriented that offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches are nearly as important as head coaches. Richardson said the Panthers will hire a new head coach first, but then go hard at offensive assistants. And no matter the coaches, he says the Panthers are going to open up.

“The NFL has changed, in the last five years, dramatically,” he said. “We would be foolish not to stay in sync with that… We didn’t score enough points. First thing, they (fans) want us to win. But after that, they want us to score points and they want excitement.”

    • I agree with OP notion, QBs always get credited for game winning drives even if they do minimal. Just last night Caleb got credited for a GE drive when they basically ran the ball the whole drive and only had to go 36 yards.   And there are drives where Bryce could of had a game winning drive if not for a Legette drop vs Philly or a Chubba fumble vs Tampa
    • You are actually, genuinely comparing Bryce to Jimmy fuging Pickles? Jimmy accounted for 3 touchdowns in his 10 starts in 2010. In Bryce’s 10 games post benching last year, he accounted for 20 touchdowns. Jimmy threw three touchdowns in 2010. Three. Bryce has thrown 10 touchdowns through 6 games. He is currently on track to throw for 3300 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Wtf are we even talking about anymore. I mean seriously
    • Tepper? The guy that directs the coaches towards goals that he set for them… that guy. He is the one.    I don’t think he ever was going to be expelled from class, they had him come in for garbage time maybe the 2nd week he was benched.  I will say this. People said he wasn’t under pressure the last part of the year when he did better, but he was fighting for his career and that’s pressure. And he saved his career too. I don’t reject him for those kinds of things I reject him for the physical things. I have always brought it down to he has slim margin for error and has to be perfect. People with the tool set have a little fatter margin for error. Why make it harder on yourself? Got nothing to do with hating him.  I am no statistician but game that margin thing out a lot and see how that works.
