Assistant Coach Options

Mr. Scot

Still think Skipper winds up wherever Fox goes, whether it's college or pro. Ditto Mike Gillhammer, maybe even Jeff Davidson.

agree.

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR - Rob Chudzinski (TE Coach, Chargers)

QB COACH - Marc Trestman (CFL)

RB COACH - Jim Skipper (former RB Coach, Panthers)

WR COACH - Al Saunders (Offensive Assistant, Ravens)

TE COACH - Pete Hoener (TE Coach, 49ers)

OL COACH - Jerry Fontenot (Asst OL Coach, Packers)

I like it, but I wonder if Trestman would leave for a position coach job. Saunders is very talented, but a bit of a wild card. I'd also expect Chryst as TEs coach, and I know Fontenot is recognizeable as a player but I'd want a better line coach than that.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR - Dave Wannstedt (former head coach, Pitt Panthers)

DL COACH - Karl Dunbar (DL Coach, Vikings)

LB COACH - Richard Smith (former LB Coach, Panthers)

DB COACH - Ed Donnatell (DB Coach, Broncos)

SPECIAL TEAMS COACH - Chris Tabor (Asst ST Coach, Bears)

Donatell is good, Smith could stay. Why would Dunbar leave MN?

Dunbar's out of contract. Tampa is trying to get him. He was the DL coach in Chicago for Rivera's first two years there so they know each other. Probably more likely we get someone like Nunnely or Cox though, but I'd like it if they got Dunbar.

Hoener and Fontenot I'm both basing on prior connection to Rivera, plus Fontenot is a third tier right now. I could easily see someone like Chryst being retained, though I think I'd honestly prefer him as QB coach over TE coach.

Saunders is working as an assistant/consultant right now. He's another one that I don't really know we'd have a shot at but who I'd like to see them try for.

Niners have stated they are retaining three assistants from the previous staff: Jim Tomsula (DL) Tom Rathman (RB) and Mike Solari (OL). Also word that WR coach jerry Sullivan is retiring. All others from the staff will likely be allowed to seek employment elsewhere.

Also looks like they may try to get Trestman. And word is they'll talk to Fangio as DC, so they may be running a 3-4.

hate not being able to choose, re: Trestman. Solari's by far the best OL coach. Cable's good, I guess.

Did I not list Cable as an option? Geez, I must be getting old :(

Word from Oakland is that Hue Jackson is "filling out his staff" even though he's not been officially announced as the new coach.

As far as I know, Leslie Frazier is keeping Mike Tice.

that'd be a neat trick, on Tice.

FWIW, I don't think I ever knew Frazier was an 85 Bear.

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
