Getting to know the Jim Johnson 4-3

This paragraph here makes me worried for Beason

Beason is too athletic to be forced into a straight up blitz/run-stop role.

Of course the other option is too move him to the Will, but he just isn't utilized best there either.

I suppose part of me is just being selfish because I wanna see the Beast continue to dominate, but at the same time, Beason is right there with Willis as the best in the league at their respective position, and I'd hate to see his abilities underutilized..

I just hope they can work something out to get the best of out of him.

why does this worry you about beason? sounds like johnson took advantage of trotter's skillset. doesn't mean mcdermott is going to try to turn beason into trotter

edit: sorry, i know i'm a couple of days late there. it's just that johnson had trotter doing a lot of something he was good at, no reason to assume the coaches are going to pigeonhole players. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think their recent mlb's played the same role as trotter

He was paid that amount of money to be a NT his job who's job is to take on blocks and stop the run. He did his job.

He didn't do it well enough. Ted Washington was playing at a higher level that he was in 2006. We could have picked through a bunch of old NTs and late round draft picks if we wanted somebody to take up blocks.

Kris Jenkins was the real NT who actually made a difference against the run even when he was fat/disgruntled. Not saying that Kemo was expected to be Kris Jenkins but he's overated even just saying he's supposed to stop the run and take up blocks. He was paid to be more than that.

Damione Lewis was a much more successful signing. It was a given he was a pass rusher and that was it. He did a decent job rushing the passer and he also didn't fall off the face of the earth once Jenkins left.

The defense was an absolute mess without him but that's what they get when the FO just absolutely ignores DT for 3 years. Nick Hayden is no Kemo. Letting two one demensional DTs be starters was a bad, bad idea with no depth was pretty much an awful idea.

In our defense Kemo played the 0 technique which required him to take up two players and free up Lewis and Peppers to be single teamed most of the time. He wasn't supposed to get penetration and was typically replaced on passing downs.

Jenkins played in the A gap and was primarily responsible for getting penetration and disrupting the play. The defense was not the same exact alignment and the responsibilities were different given the skill set differences between the 2 players.

Dan connor Anyone? I could see a Beason WLB, Connor MLB, Anderson SLB as working well. Davis could back up or even move back to SS. I could also see Davis WLB, Connor MLB, Beason SLB. Though that would def waste beason[/quote

Everyone seems to think that the MLB in this defense needs to be 6'5 and weight 250 or 260 for it to work. That's not really the case. Jim Johnson had Trotter who was 6'3 260 and could not cover anyone down the field. But he was a really good blitzer and very good at taking on an Olineman and shedding blocks. So that was how the Eagles used him.

That's not Beason. He is not a very good blitzer and is much better shifting through traffic and advoiding blocks than Trotter ever was. He can also cover 20 yards down the field which Trotter could not do. You can still run the same defense with Beason at MLB. Just have the SLB or the WLB blitz more, run more TE stunts, run more TT games. It is not hard to do. It will still be the same defense, it will just use the players it has a little different.

Connor is a fantastic blitzer where Beason is not. Connor doesn't have the spead to play outside. Beason does. Seems to make sense to make the Beason move outside permanent so that we can keep connor on the field. I don't know if getting Davis on the field is worth keeping connor off of it anymore

Comparison doesn't work. Jenkins and Lewis were expected to bring pressure due to the position they were playing as P55 pointe out. Agian NT is not supposed to get pressure.

He was paid to be a NT. And seeing as Kemoatu was consistently being double teamed, and stopped the run pretty well he did his job. What makes you think he was paid to do more?

    • I don’t think we would spend that kind of money on a LB that can’t play all 3 downs. It said he played 331 coverage snaps last year and only gave up one TD so him not being a coverage LB seems kinda like BS?
    • Moton should be back in 27 just due to the guarantees. I can't see us cutting him and eating that cap hit. Trade might be a bit different, but how many teams trade for 20m tackles?  I wouldn't be surprised to see us take 2 this year, 1 in the first and one in the 4th that has potential to play inside if they don't develop as quickly. Our line is awfully thin atm with the unknown injury Hunt got during the postseason. Even if Hunt's ok, we still lack depth. I could see is walking away from this draft with 2 tackles and a center, especially if we move down to pick up an extra 3rd or 4th.
    • He was so up and down for 4 seasons. They declined his 5 year option for a reason  Oloukon has been their LB1.  Evero loves to send pressure so my guess is if Lloyd is going to be used a 3 down back here he’ll be blitzing on 3rd down a lot. Would’ve liked to have signed someone a lot quicker if that’s the case. Lloyd isn’t very explosive. Used to be
