Cam Newton wants to be Big Ben

Recommended Posts

I just don't understand it. I wasn't even a "Cam guy" all year, but after watching more of him, I'm on board. To me, the only logical choices in my mind with our first pick are Green or Newton.

Why take a guy like Fairley with the first pick (another one year wonder IIRC) when there's a guy like Marvin Austin who could be had later in the draft with almost just as much talent, if not more?

DT is a position that you can just plug a guy into and have success if he has the right tools, QB isn't so easy... So if there's a guy there that fits the criteria you're looking for, take him.

I agree with this but at the same time think we should trade down and get draft picks. Someone is going to want Green or Fairley and quite frankly I would not mind letting them have ether one. First order of business should be to find if we can trade down, then find players of the future. I dont expect us to hit home runs in one year but more calculated strikes. The fact is that if we can get Newton and keep Clausen, then find a FA that will be a stop gap this year I would be happy. We seem to have a great QB coach and having to good QBs could not be a bad thing.

bs nothing.it's obvious, and this might not be talking about you but some guys are. people have called this guy a thug and other names, which does not describe him. if he is the franchise qb we are looking for than you take him.

the clausen and pike show will not get er done.

Ignore the people that are calling him a thug and focus on the real issues he has with his game. Once the Cam supporters start to acknowledge that he is a very raw talent, they will gain more credit for their arguments/support of him. Some issues that are real and football related with him are his terrible footwork, his lazy drops if any drop, his accuracy on down field throws, and his ability to read a defense. Not saying he can't fix any of those things, but he's going to have to work extra hard and it'll take time. He's the definition of the word project at this point and is not anywhere near worthy of the #1 pick.

I'm not sold on Newton using #1 overall on him, but you have to admit it is interesting that the 2 QB's in the Super Bowl are probably the 2 best mobile QB's (other than Vick)

Big difference between mobile and running QBs. Mobile QBs can scramble for a first down, move around in and outside of the pocket with their eyes downfield looking to make a big play and crush the defense in the process. Running QBs make one read and go or sometimes look to go before even making a read if they feel pressure. In the long run, the runs get shut down and they are forced to throw which they usually aren't as proficient at doing. When you have 22 carries a game as a QB, you are a running QB, not a mobile QB.

When Newton starts getting press like McNabb did in his early days, or Vick did, because his athleticism is bringing a new dimension to the QB position, I'll be getting the last laugh.

You can have all the press you want for his "athleticism" but I'll take guys that get the press for winning championships in the NFL, not their "athleticism.

Dude is nowhere close to Vick in terms of athleticism.

Its funny seeing Moore and Clausen slurpers argue against Cam.

Everybody on this board knows those 2 couldnt beat out Cam for a starting QB position on this team. They'd have no chance whatsoever to do that. The only way those 2 could beat him out is if we dont draft him at all. No competition is the only thing that keeps our QBs out there. Because if we did have it, those 2 would be holding clipboards very quickly.

Actually at the NFL level I'd say they probably both beat out Cam early in his career. He's got more work to do than your blinders will allow you to realize.

Neither one of those two could beat out Cam right now. What advantages he brings to the table with his athleticism and raw passing ability would outweigh any "arm strength" those two have. Just putting Cam out there would bring an excitement and attention to this fanbase that those 2 dont bring. It would give Richardson a lot of credibility and put him back in good graces with a lot of people. If Clausen starts most of next season, this fanbase will shrink tremendously by next offseason. Bank it! Those 2 dont score or win enough games to validate starting over someone with Cam's potential. Remember, Matt Moore couldnt even keep his job over Clausen even with all the cards in his favor and this team putting him in a position to shine. Neither one of those dudes step up when called upon, most other NFL franchises would've been canned these dudes and started over from scratch.

If we trade down and have multiple picks then why not take a shot at him (although trading down is highly unlikely). We just can't afford to draft a high risk player with no 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft.

i agree with this (although i wouldn't consider big ben one of the best mobile QBs in the league).

i do like his getting the same trainer, though. i and a few others have been saying all along that he is like a much more mobile big ben. i have little doubt that he will be able to learn the ropes of the pro passing game and will be able to catch on to everything he needs to.

there is no serious knock on his work ethic or leadership skills. he's got a good strong accurate arm. he's got poise under pressure. he sells fakes well. he is able to look off and freeze the safety.

he can be taught to check down when necessary and make reads and he will be more than able to buy time in the pocket to wait for things to develop. i'm not concerned about his lack of playing under center. most QBs in college don't and many of the recent successful QBs taken don't either. if we were to use the pistol formation it would make his transition to the pros and play under center a bit easier to make.

seriously, i know a lot of people would hate the pick, but he would be about as solid as they come. it would be a gamble, but so would any other QB taken, esp. in this draft. it's a gamble worth taking, imo.
