For the elite defense folks, something to ponder

Steelers have an insane amount of talent on their team.. Especially at LBers.. a lot of Steelers players have said Aaron Smith at DE is what drives that defense.. they are extremely talented in their front 7..

but they for damn sure didn't show up last night..

During the playoff run with Sanders in the line up they let up only 16.2 PPG, only 238.5 YPG, and only 82.8 on the ground. During the regular season they let up 22.5 PPG, 332.2 YPG, and 173 on the ground.

With their run defense their biggest weakness, I'd say Sanders had a little more than an impact on that.

ok and i never said Sanders didn't make the wheel go round but that doesn't make the 2006 Colts defense an elite defense

do you know what you are talking about or do you just jump into discussions to bring up something the person you're arguing with already understands, misfire trying to get your point across, and try to save face by bringing up stats instead of just leaving the fuging thread which is *hint* *hint* what you should probably do right now given that you're not gaining any ground here

The argument wasn't that they were elite.

Dude said no one has done it with a great offense and a shitty defense.

You said Colts.

I just pointed out that once healthy, they weren't shitty and were in fact an above average to good defense.

at the end of the regular season they were crap, and then turned it up when Sanders returned

a lot of those "pooty" offenses have done the same thing in the playoffs

Here's a very memorable case in point: if the Panthers don't turn up the volume on offense during our own superbowl run that we barely lost we wouldn't have made it past the Rams, and the Pats did the same thing that year. Both teams were average in offense during the regular season

Average =/= Shitty

Same goes for the post below...that defense was not shitty one bit

Yep so its not the end all either. But I have seen a superbowl won by a great defense and a pure pooty QB. Don't remember it the other way around.

Check and mate

that was a long time ago.. Ravens, IIRC.. you'll never see that again. the rules have changed..

you need both.. anyone with a little bit of intelligence understands this..

25th overall yards

20th in PPG

9th out of 12 in the postseason

no you're wrong they weren't very good

while I don't think they were a great defense, they were very high as far as turnovers created. overall the defense was pretty average across all statistics.

that being said, it's a team game, and you need a good team. Even with the Saints not having the best defensive statistics it was pretty clear that those turnovers were integral to their success.

so what that same year the bills were tied for 5th in turnovers, anybody wanna make that argument too?

that doesn't make them a good defense either

I never said they were a good defense, just not pooty.

You need a good team to win it all and that team doesn't need to be elite on both sides of the ball. It just helps if they are. :P

Edit: Back to the post by Highlandfire, things have changed. Need a good team. Saints won with a good team, if not an elite defense. Therefore, it is possible to win without an elite defense... but it's gotta be good at some things, and it was elite at creating turnovers.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
    • You gonna make me post Stank before every game?  I kid, I kid.
