I dont see how we can franchise peppers

The math just doesn't add up. We have 9 million in cap room. We can cut jakes cap number down to say 6 mill which frees up 5 mill that puts us at 14 million.

With the cuts of lucas etc that frees up say 3 million more which puts us at 17 million. It will take 17 million just to franchise peppers let alone re sign gross. In addition we need about 4 more million in cap room come the draft.

I hate to say it but I think this front office has put us in really bad pickle which is going to allow a franchise top notch player (either Gross or Peppers) to walk.

im not sure exactly how it works but im pretty sure that we dont take the cap hit unless he signs an agreement saying that he will play with us and we will pay him x amount of dollars as a franchise player. and if we do trade him to another tream it cant become official until he reaches a deal with that team. i could be totally wrong and someone please correct me if i am but im pretty sure it works some way close to that

once it's offered its on the books until the player either gets traded or the offer is rescinded by the club.

Gantt's answer...

As we wrote this weekend, one of their first moves will clear up over $8 million in immediate space, giving them plenty of room for the $16.683 million franchise tag on Julius Peppers if that's the way they want to go. They'll gain that room by guaranteeing the $10 million roster bonus for CB Chris Gamble, which they planned to do anyway.

Ah there is the way. I wasn't sure we were going to gurantee any salary's which frees up a ton of room. With simple cuts and restructures there was no way.

The best thing we can hope for is the following...

Get Gross signed

Make those moves that are listed by Gantt.

Franchise and trade peppers ASAP.

We get the cap room back as soon as Peppers is gone so we could still be somewhat active in free agency if we wanted to be.

    • So dumb I get it, they want to expand the reach of the NFL, but it's not the right sport to be playing games halfway around the world for a variety of reasons.   But one of the main ones is what happens if a player has an injury in that game? A lot of times, you're not supposed to fly right after some injuries, so when they happen here it's not a big deal, the player stays in that town for a few days and then flys home separately.  But that opens a whole bag of worms if the game is played all the way out in Australia. Plus just needing that long of a flight to get out there and back, even if they get a bye week after, it means a ton of travel and needing to adjust to a new time zone directly after another game.
    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
