So what happens when AE turns into a viable player? The fact that you can applaud him for getting rid of Fox but then disapprove of AE because he is a "bust" is an oxymoron. I say let Ron make his decisions and see what comes of Manti, if he busts he busts, but if he doesn't, then it looks like a good deal. We have to degenerate from Fox completely before we make decisions about rookie players that played under his coaching.

I dont see how you can call me an oxymoron for applauding JR for getting rid of fox but saying AE is a bust because I never said he was a bust.

I don't think AE is a bust. Actually I have said in past threads to not give up on AE because he is going to take time to develop and it will be another season before we will be able to tell if AE is a bust. I will say the same about Jimmy Clausen as well. Its not that I think JR made a bad decision by picking AE, I think JR made a bad decision because of what he traded to get the 3rd round pick that ended up being AE.

I hate the trade involving us getting AE because it just doesn't make sense to trade a future second round pick for a late 3rd round pick. I mean before the draft began we already cut our starting QB, both Starting DT, and starting FB, 2 vet linebackers and we just lost our all star DE to the Bears on top of that we didn't sign anyone in free agency. On top of that our starting Qb had less than 8 starts. It didn't take a rocket scientist to realize that we were going to struggle the upcoming season. So before JR even made the trade he knew that the upcoming season was a rebuilding season and there was a good chance that we would be picking in top of each round in the upcoming draft. We didn't even get a early 3rd round pick in the trade.

I mean honestly would you think that trading a 3rd round pick for a second round pick is smart at all? Even if our team had a good year, a 2nd round pick for a 3rd round pick isnt a good trade.

okay maybe the player he traded for was supposed to be a top pick that ended up slipping to later rounds, that would make the trade seem like we weren't getting totally screwed right? Well too bad AE was a projected 7th round that never played the position he was drafted to play. I don't see how anyone can say the trade made any sense at all. Now you probably think I hate AE but I really hope the best for the guy and I know project players like him could end up taking years so we will have to wait to see what he can do in the NFL.

We can agree on one thing though and that is, you can't judge a rookie playing under Fox. In fact its hard to judge any player on offense under the Fox regime. I also think we can agree that Rivera is going to be very different from Fox, I really have high hopes for Ron and his future with the Panthers.

    • It’s one thing if we’re converting the salaries of a Turk Wharton or Tommy Tremble.  This is Derrick Brown.  He’ll end up with a whole new contract in a couple years anyway.  And he’ll earn it too.
    • My general thoughts on the roster as it stands right now:  - Most interesting positions to watch: TE, NT, WR.  - If we add a TE I feel like it'll be a bigger name FA or Kenyon Sadiq in the 1st round. I don't expect us to take a TE that early with our need at tackle, though, so it's likely one of the top FA TEs or we ride with Tremble/Sanders/Evans again. Signing a mid-level FA or drafting another mid-round TE isn't going to help us at this point. We have three of those guys already.  - I don't buy the 1st/2nd round WR hype. I do think we will sign someone to play the slot because XL is... not good. John Metchie, Juan Jennings and Calvin Austin would make sense if the money does.  - NT could be interesting because I don't get the sense that they view Bobby Brown as a true starter. This could be a position we look to add a veteran starter at or possibly take one early in the draft.  - Devin Lloyd was a huge addition, but we need another starter beside him. I fully expect us to go after one in the 2nd round. Jacob Rodriguez makes a ton of sense here.  - The Luke Fortner signing gives us a veteran fallback at center this season. I don't expect he'll end up being our long-term starter, but it's likely he will at least begin the year atop the depth chart. Even if we draft a center it's unlikely that player ends up being a day-one starter. But I think right now we're likely targeting a center in the 3rd-4th round as that seems to be where the value is.  - We have no punter on the roster. Interested to see if we sign a veteran or go the draft/UDFA route.  - The OT situation is pretty bleak. I now fully expect us to take a tackle at #19, but even after the Stone Forsythe signing we also need better depth there. Brady Christensen would be an idea re-signing; I also like Jamaree Salyer from the Chargers as a younger option that still has room to develop.  - Guard depth is also lacking. Again, having a versatile backup like Brady Christensen would go a long way toward having some security for our entire OL, but even if he comes back we should add another veteran backup, IMO.  - I assume Lathan Ransom would be the starting FS if we played today, but we know Evero loves him some Nick Scott so I won't be surprised if/when we re-sign him. He's basically the defensive version of David Moore, unfortunately. Ideally we'd look to add a true FS, but I don't get the sense that is a big priority at the moment.  - Nickel corner is a need and I fully expect us to sign someone in the next few days to upgrade over Chau Smith-Wade. Long-term, I won't be shocked if we go CB earlier in the draft than people might expect given Mike Jackson's contract expires after this year.  - I wouldn't be shocked to see us sign a RB. Sean Tucker or Brian Robinson could be interesting. We know what Chuba can do, but Jonathon Brooks has to be considered a question mark at this point.
    • Considering the Raiders and Crosby’s disagreements about his health late last year and the Ravens’ history of being an extremely well run organization I lean towards the Ravens not being in the wrong here
