Poll of NFL sources finds gulf of opinion on QBs

accuracy at the combine isnt measured by completions... its measured by timing of the release and consistency... Cam was neither

You mean like when Brees short hopped three different passes??? Especially deep outs. Again someone needs to alert the Saints of this so they can upgrade their QB position.

By the way if you were actually paying attention he only thew 4 bad passes.

Unfortunately for Cam 3 of those 4 ended up in like the third row. :D :D

He did fine which is why a lot of scouts still have him rated the number one QB.

A lot of scouts do not have him #1. So I gotta ask as his #1 nut hugger why are you so in love with the guy? I thought you were a panthers fan? If so you dont' want them to draft a one hit wonder that has a ton of red flags and will set this franchise back several years.

drew brees had 3 years of film to dissect, 90 TDs and almost 12,000 yards.

He was still drafted in the 2nd round.

I agree with your point about the WRs, but I was saying in this forum long before the combine I'd rather have Dareus than Fairley. I don't think many people are saying Fairley had a BAD combine, just that Dareus' was so good that he passed him as consensus #1 DT (which I and plenty of other people already knew).

Julio Jones had a GREAT combine and all the sudden people want him over A.J. Green when A.J. Green's body of work is better? Fairley was a BEAST this season but he does poorly on one training day and his stock plummets? Give me a break.

He went in the second round because he is 6'0 tall, had arm strength questions, and came from a spread offense.

If he were 6'6 250 pounds with a rocket for and arm and ran a 4.59 40, he probably would have been a top ten pick.

It is all relative.

I'm just trying to say that the 11-21 thing means very little. Especially when you consider it included a drop, 4 very nice passes that weren't caught, and a WR falling on a route.

That is all. I admit that he launched a couple into the press booth. But there is a reason there is still buzz with scouts about him and his abilities.

a spread offense? do tell? The problem is that newton only has one year of tape to go on, and in that year of tape he threw significantly fewer passes than other QBs normally throw and those he DID throw were predominantly NOT the kind he would be asked to throw in the NFL. So while missing passes in the combine may not mean very much on its own, it's difficult to discount given the lack of a body of work from newton.

And as you point out with drew brees, physical gifts don't mean nearly as much as people assume they do.

14 games is plenty of tape. Would you like more?? Of course but 14 games in a conference like the SEC is plenty.

Like I said the teams have seen the tape. There is a reason he is rated as high as he is. They know what they are doing.

And physical gifts may not mean a lot but they do make things a lot easier. Just ask Clausen. If he were 3 inches taller he would possibly become a pretty doggone good QB. Last year he couldn't even use the middle of the field.

I agree the missed passes are being made a bigger deal of than they should be. The main reasons the combine took Newton out of contention in my eyes are:

1) The talking about himself in third person and way he tried to explain away the icon comment, I didn't care for. Shows signs he COULD become the type of guy that puts himself before the team and makes excuses. Maybe not, it wasn't particularly damning evidence, but it caused my eyebrow to raise.

2) Most importantly, the reports that he struggled on the white board. If these are true, it means he's putting too much effort into making himself look good in front of the camera in interviews and throwing sessions and not enough learning the more important part of the game - the part that's between his ears. It's entirely possible that interview was a fluke, or the facts were misrepresented and he's fine in this area, but these two things are enough to make me think we should just stick with someone who is safer for this year and get a vet to backup and mentor Jimmy or start if it comes to it.

If we trade down too far to get one of my top 4 or 5 and Cam is still available, then sure he's worth a shot then. But not as our only pick in the first two rounds.

14 games isn't enough for the #1 pick imo. Not with how infrequently he threw combined with the system he is from.

Rated high means nothing. Hell, actual draft order means very little, take Drew Brees.

Clausen's inability to use the middle of the field is more due to his delivery than his height.

i honestly have no idea if we should draft newton or not. but what is strange to me is that a good number of people around here have seemingly convinced themselves or each other that he isn't a HUGE risk. He is and my gut says he is too much of a risk for the #1 pick.

The reality is this. If he wasn't a physical freak NOBODY would be talking about drafting him this high. I don't need a physical freak at QB, I need someone who can throw the ball and not make mistakes. Is that cam newton? maybe. is maybe enough? Not for me, not at #1.

But if we do draft him, I'll assume that the FO knows a lot more about football than I do (cause they do,) and be pumped to watch this guy develop, because it certainly will be exciting.

Reason 1 I think is silly. I realize it rubs some people the wrong way but I don't think most people really care about it. But I am sure that some teams will look down on it, but his private interviews are going to count a heck of a lot more than some of these quotes to the media.

Reason 2; there are conflicting reports on this. Another high level scout has come out and said he was "perfect" on the whiteboard and interviews. So I wouldn't worry too much. It depends on what the Panthers take away from their interview.

Exactly. Let's hope Shula can fix that. For some odd reason, Clausen's release point was MUCH lower this past year than when he was in college.

Revamping a throwing motion is a much more difficult project than fixing footwork.

Cam has the mechanics already in place. He just has to get is footwork right and he will be fine.

Yea, reason 1 isn't a HUGE deal to me, just a minor indicator of a possible future problem.
