MMO's for a noob

I'm sure Blizzard doesn't give a damn why people log on as long as they get their $15 each month from all 12 million of them.

thats a gross $2,160,000,000 per year. yeah thats billions! LOL

You got that right.

What I find interesting is the fact that their subscription rate hasn't really grown much in the past few years.

The worst part of my LOTRO deal was I had jumped on the the bonus points offer sometime around Xmas and got 6000 for $50... I now have over 9000 Turbine Points on my account that I haven't logged into in months...

I guess the upside is that once my subscription expires in April (which I learned remains active until then and I wouldn't get a partial refund for when I canceled it a month ago) is that that should be enough points to purchase the expansions and other things worth having without having to pay any more real money...

What's funny to me is the social stigma playing games has to people outside online gaming. Yet, for some reason, the video game market as a whole has almost triple the revenues/profits of both movies and music (MPAA and RIAA) combined, including legally downloaded DVDs/Blueray and CD sales.

If this is such a "nerds-only" thing to do, then why is there so much money made from it? Technically, XBox and PS 3 are huge MMOs... just with more strictures on their grouping.

By the way Saltman, if you have RL friends who play the same MMO game, and they have more time to devote to it, you could ask them to start two characters - one for leveling solo and one for grouping up with you. That way, you never have to worry about level gaps, and you can all have fun at your own pace.

I'd put that more on market saturation than any indictment on declining product quality. They've hit equilibrium with new players coming and old timers leaving.

Its going to take an evolution in gaming to knock Blizzard out of the top spot. Something that not only breaks the mold of MMOs but totally redefines what the genre is.

yea really. It's a freaking 8 year old game. They still have millions of players. I can't think of any other game that has ever achieved close to that.

MAYBE Quake II. but th id didn't have subscription services or retail add-ons..

    • You could say that-- but if we don't need a starting OT this year, why would you draft a flawed one that is not going to play? (We are coming from different underlying assumptions and perspectives--I see your argument and don't disagree with the premise) Your thinking is based on the assumption that an OT for the future is more important than immediate needs at other positions, or that we can meet other needs in later rounds even if we take the OT in round 1.  I do not think there is but 1 OT worthy of a first-round grade---they are mocked based on need and demand--if we do not have a need for a starter right now, a team at 18 may grab a T that is the 33rd best player--worth it if you have no starting T, but not if you have a starter.  So just because they are mocked around the middle of the first it does not mean that the players are good values--teams get desperate.  QBs are a great example.  Simpson may be worth it in round 1 for the Cardinals, but not the Jets, because they have Geno Smith.  Sure, they will need a QB by next year, but taking Simpson is a reach. I do not see our need, with 2 starters (Walker and Moton) and another possibly returning by the end of the season enough to justify ranking OT over positions like Safety, Will LB--I do not think we replaced A Shawn Robinson (We gonna put a NT out there?  Wharton (280lbs)?  So do we reach in round 1 for a player who may not play much or do we get a Will LB that can cover?  A deep free safety?  A quality center? A playmaking TE?  A DT to replace Robinson?  A wide receiver to balance the secondary?  Long term, if the right player was there, you would be right.  Short term, OT is a luxury at this point, in my view.
    • Put Huey P Newton on the helmet. With his AK.
    • We arent switching. Evero is 3-4 to the core. Given how 3-4 has been a noticeable characteristic of top defenses recently and we have drafted and signed players fir it  I dont know why anyone would think that's a good idea
