OH. NO. Things Aren't Looking Good... Rivera: Too Much Blame On Clausen

He is simply increasing Clausen's trade value by this statement.

THIS and he's smart not to come out and flat out say JC is garbage as hell to kill a player with already low confidence that's going to be here a few years regardless unless he's cut.

Hopefully we still draft a QB Competition is healthy...

Funny how different people read the same thing and come away with different impressions.

Proudiddy thought it was a vote of confidence of sorts yet Evan Silva thinks:

Actually, I got that out of it too, I was just making the thread based off the headline from the Observer, which made it sound like he was backing Clausen. After reading it, I picked up on that "see if he fits in with us at all" thing as well.

He's right, it wasn't ALL Jimmy's fault, and maybe he was put into a bad position, but the problem was he never progressed and didn't show much of anything in his individual play.

My bad. Went off the thread title :)

I still say it was the vanilla play calling of JD and he's gone. Our offensive scheme was just horrible. Our play calling at times, especially deep in our own territory was horrible. rookie WR's that couldn't get open... take your pick.

I hope we don't draft a QB or at least not until later and get one of the DT's or even PP.

The most encouraging thing I have read about Clausen is that he never complained, and willingly took responsibility.

The kid showed he could play at Notre Dame. He was put in a situation that was so bad even Matt Moore couldn't succeed in it. The team had it's leadership stripped, had no defensive tackles, tons of injuries, a makeshift offensive line, etc... And he went out there and never said a word about all the bad stuff.

That's a good sign, IMHO. I really think that between Clausen, Moore, and Pike we have a QB who will do just fine next year, even if we draft Cam Gabbert.

I agree Cyber my only problem is that like some in the fanbase some of his teamates have no confidence in him. It will be hard too get his team too rally around him.

Leadership is earned, not given. The players aren't just going to "give" the team to him. Especially in the situation he was in last year. I expect improvement.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
