OH. NO. Things Aren't Looking Good... Rivera: Too Much Blame On Clausen

Leadership is earned, not given. The players aren't just going to "give" the team to him. Especially in the situation he was in last year. I expect improvement.

I'm not saying giving him anything. I'm more talking about if he can ever earn it and how hard will it be.

Jake came in 1 half and got the leadership. Jimmy may have lost all respect in one season. Hopefully most of his teamates will see he was put in the worst situation a rookie can be in and will give him a chance too earn their respect.

lol Guys, have you heard how Rivera talks about players? Put it this way, what was the last negative thing he had to say about a player in front of the media? I sure can't think of any. I'm sure he's not quite the same way in the locker room. He comes from a millitary background and there's a tradition they have when it comes to managing people - be tough on them in private but praise them in public. I can't say for sure that this is what's going on, but I do know that he's been the Paula Abdul of the NFL. He loves everyone. At least, that's what he says.

From my perspective it sounds like Rivera is saying people put TOO MUCH BLAME on Clausen. As in, it wasn't all his fault. Which it wasn't.

I'm not endorsing Clausen, but I'm not saying the season tanked because of him. He was a rookie, he lost double trouble, had an injured O-Line and had rookie WR's. Not exactly the situation I would want to be put in. And then be expected to win? Hell, if you are putting all the blame on him then there is a problem.

But like I said, I don't think he's the answer, and I don't believe Newton or Gabbert is the answer ether. To use a pick this season on a minor upgrade with "upside" wouldn't exactly appeal to me. But whatever the FO finds best for the team.

I agree!! I would not want to be in Riveria's shoes if he is inclined to draft a qb or not.I would be looking very hard at film to see why Matt Moore did so bad after a good partial year before. My opinion is that the demise of our offense last year was a culmination of releasing Vincent,OL injuries, two young qbs, young wrs and an offensive scheme that sucked. If I were him I would make sure that our OL is in order and we have a veteran QB for leadership and to compete for the starting job. With Smith getting some age, a WR would be nice as well.We really have only 2 options to address our offensive in the draft and drafting the qbs availible are risky and will do very little to help our offense next year. The 2nd option is draft Green.Clausen will be on the team next year so I would not expect him to show a public lack of confidense in him.

Actually, I got that out of it too, I was just making the thread based off the headline from the Observer, which made it sound like he was backing Clausen. After reading it, I picked up on that "see if he fits in with us at all" thing as well.

He's right, it wasn't ALL Jimmy's fault, and maybe he was put into a bad position, but the problem was he never progressed and didn't show much of anything in his individual play.

^^this.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
