Rivera Talks QBs

Throw out Bradford because he's too soon to tell but so far:

2009 Matthew Stafford - Can't stay healthy, done nothing for them so far

2007 JaMarcus Russell - Epic Fail

2005 Alex Smith - Pretty big fail

2004 Eli Manning - SB winner, average to good QB

2003 Carson Palmer - Good QB, bad situation, only playoff start got hurt early

2002 David Carr QB - Epic Fail

2001 Michael Vick - Mixed bag, was an epic fail, turning it around but who knows

1999 Tim Couch - Epic Fail

1998 Peyton Manning - Great Pick

In the last 12 (9 QBs) years, there has been only 2 SB winners, 4 pretty big fails, Palmer, Vick, and Stafford. Palmer looks to be done and Stafford looks to never have started. Who knows with Vick but it looks promising.

1993 Drew Bledsoe -

1990 Jeff George

1989 *Troy Aikman

1987 Vinny Testaverde

1983 *John Elway

1975 Steve Bartkowski

1971 Jim Plunkett

1970 *Terry Bradshaw

In the previous 24 years, only 9 QBs were taken. There has been a recent infatuation with QBs and it's not paying off that well for the teams. Teams feel they "NEED" a QB and end up reaching and missing more often than not.

Depending on how you view Stafford, Vick, and Palmer and whether they were worth the #1 pick considering their careers so far, the stats could be a little deflating.

If your name isn't manning, you aren't worth the #1 at QB is what I get from it. Is Cooper draft eligible?

In the last 20 years there has only been 1 clear cut #1 QB and that was P. Manning, although I'd actually take Eli #1 if given the opportunity, because I feel like he's the real deal too, but the thing is EVERYBODY knew the Mannings were going to be Superbowl winners. It was known even when they were still playing college ball.

Nobody believes Cam or Gabbert are equal to the Mannings and it is for this reason, that Rivera MUST pass on these guys and take the BEST available player or trade down!

If we can't trade down, then you gotta take Peterson with the pick. Peterson is the surest thing in the draft.

#1 QBs can often struggle because if you're picking #1 you rarely have a decent team outside of QB.

Yep the first year is often tough on #1 QB's. I don't think we are a typical "dead last" team. Our offence wasn't just the worst in the league it was epically bad. Our defense was decent despite playing almost 3/4 of the games.

I rate our needs as

1. QB

2. DT

3. CB especially if the Falcons pick up a new star WR.

4. OG

QBs go #1 more times than not. This list is pretty impressive, but there are also some dudes in there. Rather than reaching for QBs that were not the #1 pick over all, why don't you discuss the guys on this list and explain why Cam's name belongs on it.

I feel he belongs on it for the following reasons:

1) I love the way he throws the ball in game situations. We aren't talking combine or pro day, just what he has done in-game

2) He has consistently shown an ability to lead his team from behind against good competition

3) He performs well under the pressure of a pass rush

4) He has prototypical size and arm strength

There are other reasons, but these are the most attractive to me.
